Middlesbrough vs Manchester City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough host Manchester City at the Riverside Stadium on 11/03/17 in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup. Middlesbrough will be looking for a significant improvement after losing 2-0 away to Stoke last time out. Manchester City, on the other hand, suffered an almost as frustrating result on Wednesday night, as they also faced Stoke, drawing 0-0 at home to the Potters. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester City’s main weakness comes in the form of their defence; Middlesbrough’s recent form suggests they won’t be able to exploit that particular issue. I’m expecting this to go the way of Manchester City and am predicting that the away side will book their place at Wembley for the semi-finals.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough were clearly second best during their defeat by Stoke last time out, as Aitor Karanka’s side again struggled to impose themselves on the game from an attacking perspective. Marko Arnautovic opened the scoring for Stoke after he latched onto Glenn Whelan’s pass and converted after moving past two Boro defenders. The second came in a manner which will likely have infuriated the defensive-minded Karanka, as Peter Crouch rose highest from a corner and his knockdown found Arnautovic who scored his second of the game. As has so often been the case this season for Boro, they posed little threat to the Stoke goal and were unable to even pull back a consolation. They have now gone 433 minutes without a Premier League goal, although the FA Cup has brought no such issues. Part of that is the fact they’ve played against non-Premier League opposition in all three of their rounds so far, scoring seven goals in the three points before now. League Two, League One and Championship have all succumbed to Boro at the Riverside in the FA Cup so far, and they will now be looking to replicate their heroics from this competition in 2015 when they knocked City out in the fourth round, then as a Championship side.

Man City Preview

Amidst the euphoria and incredible scenes in the Champions League at the Nou Camp on Wednesday evening, some may have noticed that Manchester City were in Premier League action. However, this was a far from as enthralling tie, as Mark Hughes came back to haunt his former employers. Stoke, unlike in previous away visits to top-six sides - were resilient defensively and denied City - who rotated their squad - settle for a point. Despite the setback, they remain unbeaten in nine since their 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Everton at Goodison Park in mid-January. They also have a fantastic record at home this term, losing just one of eighteen matches at the Etihad and even then, only runaway leaders Chelsea were able to claim three points from them on home turf. But previous encounters with Middlesbrough will leave City wary of the threat they possess and they will be looking to avoid a repeat of the shock they were on the receiving end of in 2015. City’s draw with Stoke put to bed any slim hopes they had of catching the dominant Chelsea, who are now ten points clear with eleven to play, adding extra significance to this competition if Guardiola wants to claim silverware between now and the end of the season. Most would argue this, over the Champions League, is City’s best opportunity to pick up a trophy this term.
