Middlesbrough vs Liverpool Match Prediction

By Sam Turbitt

The Riverside hosts Middlesbrough and Liverpool this Wednesday in a Premier League clash. Middlesbrough were beaten 1-0 by Southampton at the weekend and will be keen to put points on the board tonight. Liverpool will have been disappointed to drop points at West Ham on Sunday, after battling out a 2-2 draw. The betting preview will provide you with our betting tips, the latest team news and key match stats.

Middlesbrough Preview

With only 3 wins in the Premier League so far this season Middlesbrough will be under no illusion regarding their Premier League security. Aitor Karanka’s side have accumulated 15 points from their opening 15 games, and are just 3 points adrift of the relegation zone. Key players in recent weeks have been Gaston Ramirez and Alvaro Negredo, both of whom are doubts for Wednesday’s game. Ramirez and Negredo are the only 2 players to have scored in Middlesbrough’s last 6 games. Boro though will be realistic about this game, knowing that Liverpool are one of the strongest teams in England. At any given moment Liverpool are capable of creating opportunities, so I expect to see Middlesbrough on the back foot for the majority of the game. For Middlesbrough to take a point at least from this game they may need to revert back to the same style that served them so will in the Championship last year, by building from the back and hoping to nick something.

Liverpool Preview

The Merseysiders will have left the London Stadium disappointed with a point at the weekend, having dominated their opponents. It has been a theme continued over their last 4 league games, which has seen them take 5 points from their last 4 games. Having thrown away a 3-1 lead against Bournemouth the previous week the last thing they needed was 2 errors leading to goals at the weekend. A change in goalkeeper is largely expected for this game with Karius suffering some bad form. This should path the way for Simon Mignolet to return between the sticks, in a bid to improve their defensive woes. Despite injuries to Coutinho and Sturridge Liverpool have found the net 19 times in their last 7 Premier League games. They will fancy themselves to score at the Riverside having bagged 11 goals in their last 5 away appearances in the league.

Middlesbrough Team News

Defender Daniel Ayala is back in training but is still a doubt with an ankle injury. Alvaro Negredo (hamstring), Gaston Ramirez (foot injury) and George Friend (knee) are all doubtful for Wednesday’s game. Defender James Husband remains sidelined until early January.

Liverpool Team News

Defender Dejan Lovren looks set to miss out with a hamstring strain. For Emre Can (knee injury) and Daniel Sturridge (calf) this could be a game too soon for them. Danny Ings (knee injury) and Philippe Coutinho remain Liverpool’s only long-term absentees and won’t be available until the new year.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Two teams who could not be more different from each other. Liverpool will certainly look to attack Middlesbrough, and the home side will do all they can to contain them. I fancy Liverpool to continue their form in front of goal and go on to win this game. In the preview we have touched upon their strengths in attack, for that reason I really like the look of a Liverpool win and over 2.5 goals.
