Middlesbrough vs Cardiff City Match Prediction

By Gary Gillles

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture sees two sides who rank highly in the betting markets for Championship promotion. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Middlesbrough made it back-to-back 2-2 draws the last time out picking up a point at Oakwell. They had to twice fight back from behind to claim the point thanks to a goal each from Martin Braithwaite and Britt Assombalonga. Cardiff suffered just their second league defeat of the season as they went down 1-0 at Birmingham on Friday night. The result was probably a little harsh on them but they struggled to break down a well drilled Blues side. The last time these two sides met at the Riverside Stadium was two seasons ago and Boro won that game 3-1. In fact, the North-Eastern outfit have won four of their last five against the Welsh team.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Three of the last four Middlesbrough games have finished all-square while two of the last five for Cardiff have done the same and I think this looks like another draw. Boro are struggling to win games while you know Neil Warnock will take a point from a visit to one of his promotion rivals. Both these sides have scored around two-thirds of their league goals this season in the second-half and therefore it makes sense to have a small interest on the second 45 minutes to be the highest scoring.

Middlesbrough Preview

It is just three points from their last four from Boro who now sit in 11th place with 17 points from their opening 12 fixtures. This marks their only one of the next four to come against teams in the top-half of the table. At the Riverside, they have been strong with three victories, two draws and just one defeat from their six in the league. Their games in front of their own fans are a mixed bag with two of the last five going over 3.5 goals though also two of their last five have gone under 1.5 goals. They are strong at the back with just 11 goals conceded which is the joint fourth best record in the division. The first-half is not strong for the North-Eastern side who would be as low as 18th if games were decided after just 45 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede is a doubt for this game with a thigh injury.

Cardiff City Preview

The Welsh outfit are now without a win in two games and have taken just one point from these matches. They still sit in second place though with 24 points and five of their next seven are against teams in the bottom half. Away from the Cardiff City Stadium, it has been a mixed bag recently with two victories, one draw and two defeats. Their road trips tend to be low-scoring with just 13 goals in total from the six played. The Bluebirds have the joint second best defensive record in the division with Sheffield United while they have a top six ranked attack. Around 63% of the of the goals they have netted came in the second-half and 24% in the final 15 minutes.

Cardiff City Team News

Frederic Gounongbe (hip) is a doubt while Kadeem Harris (ankle), Rhys Healey (cruciate), Ashley Richards and Aron Gunnarsson (both ankle) are ruled out for at least a month.
