Middlesbrough vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough host Burnley at the Riverside Stadium on 08/04/17 in a game where nothing less than a win will do for the home team. Boro were beaten convincingly last time out, going down 4-2 away to Hull City in a crucial six-pointer. Burnley, alternatively, were on the winning side of a result last time out after seeing off Stoke 1-0 at Turf Moor. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Burnley will be coming to Middlesbrough with the expectation of getting a result given the form of the home side. Despite that, I’m not expecting Boro to lose this and can see each team cancelling each other out in a draw.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough’s intent to attack Hull City in their meeting in midweek ultimately backfired last time out, losing 4-2 to their relegation rivals and dropped seven points beneath them in the table as a result. Starting with two in attack in Alvaro Negredo and Rudy Gestede, the former opened the scoring just five minutes into the game. However, their lack of bodies behind the ball were left exposed as Lazar Markovic, Oumar Niasse and Abel Hernandez all netted before the 34th minute to leave Hull 3-1 to the good. Marten de Roon then scored before the break to restore hope, but Harry Maguire’s 70th minute header won the game for the Tigers, who moved out of the bottom three with the win. With no wins in thirteen, collecting just five points from a possible thirty-nine in that time, the writing now seems to be on the wall for Boro, who have seven points to make up on Hull in 17th, albeit with a game in hand. Caretaker boss Steve Agnew hasn’t really had the desired effect since taking over prior to the Manchester United game, taking just one point from three games so far. Given Burnley’s away for, Boro will absolutely feel this is a game they must take maximum points from if they are to have any chance of staying in the division for next season.

Burnley Preview

Burnley returned to winning ways on Tuesday evening, keeping a clean sheet in the process as they beat Stoke City 1-0 at Turf Moor. Coming into the game, Burnley hadn’t won in their previous nine matches, with the team also failing to score in the two games immediately before Stoke. The Potters switched to a 3-4-2-1 formation, but Burnley were able to adapt and cope with the tactical switch as George Boyd scored the only goal of the game to secure their 10th home victory of the Premier League victory. With Swansea currently on 28 points in 18th, Burnley are seven points clear of the relegation zone with seven games to go and appear to be relatively safe from relegation come the end of the current campaign. It is incredible that, despite taking just three points away from home all season, that they are in such a strong position, although given the current form of Middlesbrough they will fancy their chances of ending their winless streak away from home. Burnley are unbeaten in their last three meetings with Middlesbrough, winning two and drawing three, with each game coming in a different competition - the FA Cup, Championship and Premier League.
