Middlesbrough vs Brentford Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) game features two sides in opposite halves of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Middlesbrough saw a seven game unbeaten run in all competitions come to a halt as they were undone at the Riverside Stadium by Norwich. It was game in which they saw more of the ball and created more chances but could find no way past a well-drilled defence marshalled superbly by Angus Gunn. Brentford needed a late Ollie Watkins goal to rescue a point from their home game with Derby in midweek. They were the better side and worthy of at least a point but this has often been the case this season and they have not been rewarded. The last time these two sides met at the Riverside Stadium was September 2015 and Middlesbrough won that game 3-1. In fact, Boro have won each of the last six and lost none of the last nine meetings between the pair.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough are expected to bounce back here but when their top striker has blanked in his last three and no other player has netted more than one goal it does not appeal for me to take the short price. Under 2.5 goals looks the selection here as this would have paid in seven of ten for Boro and six of ten for Brentford. Just one of their six at the Riverside in all competitions has seen both teams score while just one of five league road trips for the London outfit so NO in the both teams to score market looks sensible.

Middlesbrough Preview

Defeat in midweek was just their second in nine for Boro and their third for the season in the league. This marks the first of a series of six fixtures with just one of them (Cardiff at home) against a side in the top-half. At home, they have taken ten of their 15 points with three victories, one draw and one defeat from five. The North-Eastern side have kept three home clean sheets this but have also failed to score in two at their own ground. Britt Assombalonga is their only player to have scored more than one goal this season though he has not netted in the last three and just one in five in all competitions. Two of the three they have conceded in front of their own fans came in the opening 15 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (thigh) is a doubt.

Brentford Preview

Four points from their last two games has seen the Bees climb out of the relegation zone and going into the weekend they sat 20th. A tendency to draw has been a problem this season with five of their ten league fixtures ending all-square. On the road, they have lost three times, drawn once and emerged victorious at Bolton. They failed to fire in their first three road games but they have since netted once at Sheffield Wednesday and three times at Bolton. Ollie Watkins has three league goals for the season with the 21-year-old having netted in each of his last two. 64% of their goals have come in the second-half with 45% coming in the final 15 minutes.

Brentford Team News

Lasse Vibe (foot) and John Egan (head) are doubts while Lewis Macleod continues his slow recovery from a cruciate ligament injury.
