Middlesbrough vs Birmingham City Match Prediction

By William Hall

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture features the early leaders playing host to a side who drew their opening encounter. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Middlesbrough looked to be headed for an opening day defeat at Millwall but two goals in the last four minutes (one each for George Friend and Martin Braithwaite) enabled them to claim a 2-2 draw. It was better in midweek though for the Teesiders who eased past Sheffield United 3-0 with a goal each for Martin Braithwaite, Aden Flint and Stewart Downing. Birmingham looked on course for an opening day victory against Norwich as they twice took the lead first through Jacques Maghoma and then Viv Soloman-Otabor but the Canaries fought back both times so they had to settle for a 2-2 draw. The meeting at this ground last season between these sides ended in a 2-0 Boro home victory with Britt Assombalonga grabbing a brace. They completed the double later in the season and they are eight without defeat against the Midlands outfit.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough showed in midweek that they can still carry a threat going forward without Adama Traore (who has been sold to Wolves) netting three times. Birmingham showed in their opener that they can carry a threat so backing both teams to score makes a lot of sense. In addition, given the Teesiders have won each of their last nine in front of their own fans and the Midlands outfit six of their last seven take a Boro victory and combine it with both teams to score.

Middlesbrough Preview

Four points from two games is a decent start to the season for the Teesiders and if you discount the play-offs they are now six unbeaten in Championship matches. Just two of their last six have seen both teams find the back of the net. At the Riverside Stadium, they have won their last four regular season fixtures and eight of their last nine. In three of these four (including on Tuesday night) Boro have stopped the opposition scoring. Martin Braithwaite has netted in both fixtures this season while Aden Flint has scored once and is averaging two shots per game. Middlesbrough have kept a clean sheet in their last three home matches against Birmingham in all competitions.

Middlesbrough Team News

Daniel Ayala (calf), Rudy Gestede (ankle), Patrick McNair (unknown) and Jordan Hugill (knock) are all expected to miss out.

Birmingham City Preview

The Blues opened their season with a 2-2 draw which was their third in their last seven if you consider last season. It continues a trend of both teams to score which has now happened in their last four and six of their last seven. Away from St Andrew’s, they ended the season with three straight defeats and six of their last seven. The second city side did though manage to find the net at least once in five of these. Birmingham have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their last four including on the opening day of this season. Considering last season, they have conceded in the last ten minutes in each of their last three and four of their last five.

Birmingham City Team News

David Stockdale (unknown), David Davis (broken ankle), Nicolai Brock-Madsen (thigh) are all doubts.
