Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday early evening (17:15) fixture is the first-leg of the Championship promotion play-off semi-final.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Middlesbrough ended the season with a four-game unbeaten run after drawing 2-2 at Ipswich on the final day.  Stewart Downing and Patrick Bamford got the goals as the Teesiders finished fifth.

Aston Villa saw their four-game unbeaten run come to an end on the final day of the season going down 1-0 to Millwall.  Villa though were already guaranteed to finish fourth so their motivation was hardly high.

These sides met three times this season with honours even as both won a game and the other ended all-square.  It ended 0-0 in the league in September at Villa Park while Boro won at the same ground a week later in the League Cup and then in December they met at the Riverside and the Midlands outfit won that 1-0.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given that these two sides were separated by just seven points over the season and that I think there is little to choose between them I am surprised that bookmakers think Aston Villa are so strong to qualify.  Middlesbrough are being overlooked as they have a smart manager, good players and lost just two of their last 14 so back them to qualify.

The Midlanders have lost six of their eight on the road away to sides in the top nine and they face a home side who have won seven of their last eight in front of their own fans and I think they look good things to win here.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough will be looking to bounce back to the Premier League at the first time of asking following relegation last season.  A mid-season move to replace Gary Monk with Tony Pulis has worked well winning 12 and losing just five of his 24 games in charge.

At the Riverside Stadium, the Teesiders have been strong with the joint-third best winning record in the division.  They have the joint-second best defensive record at home in the division but they only have the joint-eleventh best attack.

They ended the season well with just one defeat in their last seven and two in their last 14 Championship fixtures.  Six of their last eight (and five of their last seven at home) have seen both teams find the back of the net.

Middlesbrough Team News

Rudy Gestede (broken ankle) is their only doubt ahead of this fixture.

Aston Villa Preview

Aston Villa were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion but only for a brief spell did they ever threaten to crack the top two.  Steve Bruce was a manager under threat after a slow start but he found a formula that moved the Midlanders up the table into fourth.

Away from Villa Park, they have showed decent form with their ten victories joint-fourth best in the division.  They have though struggled on their travels to end the season winning just one of the previous five.

The Midlands side had a good end to the season losing just two of their last eight and five of their last 22.  Lewis Grabban ended the campaign in good scoring form netting four times in the last four.

Aston Villa Team News

Birkir Bjarnason (calf), Neil Taylor (unknown), Andre Green (hamstring), Axel Tuanzebe, Gabby Agbonlahor, Jordan Lyden (all ankle) and Jed Steer (dislocated shoulder) are all doubts.
