Middlesbrough vs Aston Villa Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday (30th) afternoon (15:00) fixture features two sides just outside the play-off picture in the Championship. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Middlesbrough marked their first game without Gary Monk in charge with a comfortable 2-0 home victory over Bolton on Boxing Day. Martin Braithwaite put them ahead just after the break and a second goal from Britt Assombalonga wrapped up the three points. Aston Villa continued their recent poor run of form as they suffered a 2-1 loss at Brentford on December 26th. A Joshua Onomah goal gave them hope of something but they can have few complaints as the Bees were the better team. These two sides have already met this season with the first time coming at Villa Park on September 12th in a game that ended goalless. They then met again a week later in the League Cup and Boro won that one 2-0 thanks to a Patrick Bamford brace.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Boro have won three of their last four at home and new man in charge Tony Pulis will unlikely change much from a side he saw beat Bolton 2-0 on Boxing Day. Given Villa have several injuries to key players I think the home win looks the selection. It is eight in a row for the Teesiders that have seen two or three goals scored and the last five on the road for Villa so this looks a sensible bet in the total goals market.

Middlesbrough Preview

Tony Pulis will inherit a side in a good place having won two games in a row and three of their last four and sitting in seventh place. The Teesiders now face three games in succesion against sides just below them in the league table. At the Riverside Stadium, they have won their last two and four of their last five keeping clean-sheets in all these victories. Martin Braithwaite has netted in the last two at his own ground while Britt Assombalonga has three in the last four home matches. Each of the last eight Middlesbrough have played have produced a total of two or three goals. Around 62% of the goals they have scored have come in the second-half with 53% in the final 30 minutes.

Middlesbrough Team News

Boro have no registered injuries or suspensions ahead of this game.

Aston Villa Preview

Villa have hit a mini bump in form as they are now five without a victory although three of these did end in a draw. They have slipped to eighth place and play two higher placed sides in their next two. Away from Villa Park, they have lost their last two and taken just one point from their last three. Each of their last five on the road has seen a total of two or three goals. The last two they have played have gone over 2.5 goals but the four before that went under this. Just 43% of their goals have come in the second-half and just 9% in the final 15 minutes of a fixture.

Aston Villa Team News

Andre Green, Chris Samba and Henri Lansbury (all hamstring), Albert Adomah (hip) and Jordan Lyden (ankle) are doubts. John Terry (broken toe) and Jonathan Kodjia (ankle) are long-term absentees.
