Middlesbrough vs Arsenal Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Middlesbrough host Arsenal at the Riverside Stadium on 17/04/17 with both teams knowing that a defeat would virtually end their season. Middlesbrough’s struggles in front of goal came to the fore once more against Burnley last time out, drawing 0-0 at home to the Clarets. Arsenal meanwhile were soundly beaten 3-0 at Crystal Palace to put further pressure on the already highly scrutinised Arsene Wenger. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Middlesbrough’s current winless streak is the longest in the Premier League and they will be hoping to take advantage of the disharmony at Arsenal here. However, Boro have been that poor in recent weeks I can’t see them getting over the hump against Arsenal, who will seriously need to take a look at themselves here if they are unable to get the three points.

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough now come into this fixture without a win in fourteen Premier League games after their 0-0 draw at home to Burnley last time out, with this proving to be their 12th draw of the current season. With Burnley still searching for their first away victory this season, you wouldn’t begrudge Middlesbrough for feeling disappointed at having come away with just a point, with this a real opportunity to close the gap on Hull and Swansea, both of whom lost at the weekend. Alvaro Negredo came closest for Boro but, as has been the case through much of the season, they were unable to find a way past the opposition goalkeeper, this time Tom Heaton standing in their way. For a team who are in such a difficult situation, the lack of tempo and apparent fight from the Boro players suggests this is a team who believes they no longer have much of a chance of escaping relegation. It is somewhat remarkable that a team who has just four Premier League wins to their name from thirty-one matches is just six points from safety and has a significantly better goal difference than sides in and around themselves. Here, they will be looking to secure their first win at the Riverside this calendar year and inflict further misery on an Arsenal side whose season in disintegrating just as quickly as their own.

Arsenal Preview

Those of the ‘Wenger Out’ brigade added another arrow to their bow last Monday as the Gunners recent Premier League record was worsened to just two victories in their last eight matches. Former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend put the hosts in front as he met Wilfried Zaha’s low cross and Yohan Cabaye - who once chased a move to the Gunners - made it 2-0 in the second half with a fantastic finish from the edge of the box, Zaha again with the assist. Luka Milivojevic converted from the spot kick as Palace completed Arsenal’s miserable evening with 22 minutes remaining, as shouts of “you’re not fit to wear the shirt” reverberated around the away end at Selhurst Park. Currently 6th and seven points adrift of the top four - albeit with games in hand on the teams currently occupying the Champions League places - it now appears as if Wenger’s perfect record of getting Arsenal into the Champions League may be about to end. With defeats in each of their last four away games, they won’t be relishing yet another away trip here, although if they could’ve handpicked an opponent to face on current form Middlesbrough wouldn’t have been too far away from the top of their list of selections. Alexis Sanchez was nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award this week and the Chilean will need to prove he is worthy of such accolades having gone missing in recent weeks.
