Mexico vs Honduras Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Mexico and Honduras will be facing each other in the quarter-finals of the 2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup on Thursday night. Mexico managed a comfortable 0-2 win over Curacao in their final group fixture thanks to goals from Angel Baltazar Sepúlveda and Edson Omar Alvarez. Meanwhile, Honduras come into this tie on the back of a nil-nil draw against Canada in their final group match. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

I’m not expecting an entertaining affair as both sides have struggled to find the back of the net throughout the group stage. However, I think that Mexico should be able to win and to keep a clean sheet.

Mexico to win at 4/7

Both teams to score - No at 2/3

Mexico have not conceded a goal in 70% of their last 10 games played against Honduras

Mexico Preview

Mexico finished at the top of the group C table with seven points under their belts after three group fixtures, two points more than the runners-up Jamaica. They managed to beat El Salvador and Curacao, but were held to a nil-nil draw by Jamaica. They looked very well-organized at the back throughout the group stage, conceding just once in three games. Furthermore, Mexico’s five goals at this tournament have been scored by five different players. Mexico have reached the knockout stage of the competition in every edition of the Gold Cup since its inception in 1991. El Tri should feel confident ahead of this clash as they are undefeated in their last five meetings with Honduras across all competitions, conceding none in the process. Actually, Mexico managed to beat Honduras 3-0 in a World Cup qualifier a month ago. The Mexicans lacked firepower throughout this tournament, but that’s because coach Osori decided to give a chance to younger players instead of using their standard lineup with the likes of Jimenez, Chicharito, Giovani dos Santos or Lozano.

Mexico Team News

Mexico have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this clash, although they should start with Pineda and Barragan again.

Honduras Preview

On the other hand, Honduras kicked off their CONCACAF Gold Cup campaign with a narrow 0-1 loss at the hands of Costa Rica. However, they were awarded a 3-0 victory over French Guiana as the minnows were penalised for fielding an ineligible player in the shape of former France midfielder Florent Malouda. Their last group fixture ended as a nil-nil draw against Canada, which means that their three goals came via the forfeit win over French Guiana. They qualified for this stage of the competition as one of the best third-placed teams. The bad news is that Honduras aren’t regarded as good travelers as they are winless in the last five away games and have only scored twice in this term. In addition, Honduras are winless in their last five meetings with Mexico and the most worrying fact is that they have failed to score a single goal in the process. Honduras have improved considerably over the past few years, but I don’t think they have enough to beat the Mexicans here. They aren’t doing very well in the World Cup qualifiers also as they have only collected five points after six games.

Honduras Team News

Honduras should have their best players on the field on Thursday as they have no fresh injury concerns.
