Melbourne City FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers FC Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Melbourne City’s winning run at the start of A-league 2017-18 came to an end following a 1-0 defeat against Sydney. In a tight match that saw both teams go close on a number of occasions, Melbourne City suffered a first defeat courtesy of a 59th minute goal from Luke Wilkshire. The search for a first win for Western Sydney continues, as the team were involved in a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory. The decisive moment in the game was the 24th minute red card for Mitchell Austin. Western Sydney capitalised on this advantage to score the opening goal through Oriol Riera in the 32nd minute, but they were pegged back by a 49th minute equaliser from Thomas Deng.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Melbourne City have been in excellent form and have suffered just one blip so far. More importantly, this blip came against reigning champion Sydney. Western Sydney, meanwhile, have been struggling for form with no wins in the first five matches, although they have been unbeaten so far. Out of the recent six games between City and Western Sydney, the home team has been able to win on five occasions. I would go with a victory for Melbourne City. The strong start for City has been built on a defence that has conceded just two goals – with one of them coming in the latest match. Western Sydney have failed to score in the recent game against City. I would go with this game ending up as a low scoring game with less than 2.5 goals.

Melbourne City FC Preview

Melbourne City’s brilliant start to the season has concluded with the loss against Sydney. This was always going to be a tough match for City, but the team has performed well so far this season. A run of three clean sheets in the first five matches of the season was a major factor behind preventing Sydney from scoring more than a goal. City are hoping for a much better outcome than the fourth place finish in the 2016-17 campaign. In this early A-League 2017-18 table, City are second in the table – only behind Sydney.

Melbourne City FC Team News

Bruno Fornaroli continues to remain on the sidelines with his malleolar injury. He is the only absentee for City.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC Preview

The lack of wins even after five matches into the season forced Western Sydney to act. Anthony Popovic’s departure from the club has seen Gombau come in as the new manager. He was unable to prevent his team from dropping points – despite possessing a numerical advantage – in the recent game against Melbourne Victory. Western Sydney may have not suffered any defeat so far this season, but the club’s return of just seven points from five matches places them in the fourth position. Western Sydney are expected to be defensively solid under the regime of Gombau, who has a reputation for being pragmatic.

Western Sydney Wanderers FC Team News

There are no injuries and suspension worries for Josep Gombau coming into the match.
