Marseille vs Rennes Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Rennes will be searching for their first victory of the new Ligue 1 season when they travel to the Stade Velodrome to take on Marseille on Sunday night. Marseille suffered a humiliating 6-1 defeat on the road at Monaco prior to the International break, with their consolation goal being scored by Remy Cabella in the 74th minute. Meanwhile, Rennes lost 3-2 on the road at Toulouse last time out in Ligue 1, with Firmnin Mubele and Ismaila Sarr getting on the scoresheet for Christian Gourcuff’s men. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although Rennes are in dire need of a victory here, I’m backing Marseille to get back to winning ways. OM’s home form over the past six months has been impressive, while Rennes have only won once in their last 14 away league games. Furthermore, Marseille have won three of their last five home league meetings with Rennes across all competitions.

Marseille Preview

Marseille’s 24-game unbeaten streak across all competitions ended in a disappointing manner a fortnight ago as they were beaten 6-1 by the reigning champions Monaco. OM have endured a mixed run of form in this early part of the new Ligue 1 season, registering two wins, one draw and one defeat in four games. They still sit sixth in the league table with seven points under their belts after four rounds, already five points off joint leaders Monaco and Paris Saint Germain. During their recent run of form, Marseille managed to qualify for the Europa League group stage after two ties against Oostende and Domzale. Marseille have been handed an easy Europa League group I with the likes of Red Bull Salzburg, Konyaspor and Vitoria Guimaraes. Despite their humiliating loss at the hands of Monaco a fortnight ago, Marseille can count on their home form ahead of this clash. OM are unbeaten in 13 home games across all competitions, winning eleven in the process. In addition, Marseille have won three of their last five home meetings with Rennes in Ligue 1, scoring at least two goals in each of these. Clinton N’Jie is Marseille’s top scorer at the moment with three goals under his belt, but the 24-year-old striker got injured towards the end of June, and he is still on the sidelines.

Marseille Team News

Adil Rami, Clinton N’Jie and Konstatinos Mitroglou are all out through injury, while Dimitri Payet is a doubt. Furthermore, Lucas Ariel Ocampos is missing through suspension.

Rennes Preview

Rennes have started the new season in a disappointing manner, losing two and drawing two of their opening four league fixtures. They are one of the worst teams in this early part of the new campaign as they have only collected two points from four games and are currently second from bottom in the standings. Conceding has been the main reason for their struggle in the early part of the season, as they allowed at least two goals in three of their opening four league games. Actually, they have the third worst defensive record in the division with eight goals conceded in four league fixtures. The good news is that they looked decent at the other end of the field, having already scored six goals in four rounds. Firmnin Mubele has enjoyed a solid start to the season, helping the team with three goals and one assist in his four league appearances. The worrying thing is that Rennes have only won once in their last 14 away games in Ligue 1 and are currently on a two-game winless streak. Furthermore, Rennes were on a two-game winning streak against Marseille prior to their 2-0 defeat in their most recent visit to the Stade Velodrome.

Rennes Team News

Yoann Gourcuff, Abdoulaye Diallo and Joris Gnagnon are all doubts, while Morgan Amalfitano is out through suspension. The good news is that Brandon and Anthony Ribelin are both back in training following their respective injuries.
