Marseille vs Dijon Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Marseille will be aiming to kick-off their new Ligue 1 campaign brightly when they welcome Dijon at the Stade Velodrome on Sunday night. Marseille enter the fray on the back of a nil-nil away draw at Oostende in their Europa League midweek clash, although they managed to win 4-2 in the first leg a week ago. Meanwhile, Dijon drew nil-nil at home against the newly-promoted Strasbourg in a friendly fixture last weekend. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Marseille should have no problems in picking up all three points in this one as their recent form has been outstanding, while Dijon definitely have a much weaker squad than last season. I’m also expecting Marseille to score a couple of goals here, as they have a quality attacking trio in the shape of Dimitri Payet, Valere Germain and Remy Cabella.

Marseille Preview

Marseille are currently on an unbelievable 19-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. OM have enjoyed an impressive pre-season campaign, winning five and drawing once in six friendlies. Furthermore, Marseille managed to qualify for the Europa League play-offs following a 4-2 aggregate victory over Oostende thanks to a hat-trick from Valere Germain in the first leg. Marseille finished 5th in the Ligue 1 table last season, just five points behind the 4th-placed Lyon, but I’m expecting them to finish higher this year after their tremendous summer transfer campaign. OM managed to keep all their key players at the club this summer and they also brought in Luiz Gustavo from Wolfsburg for €10m, Valere Germain from Monaco for €8m, Clinton N’Jie from Tottenham Hotspurs for €7m, Adil Rami from Sevilla FC for €6m and Steve Mandanda from Crystal Palace for €3m. Furthermore, OM have also finalized the permanent move of Florian Thauvin from Newcastle for €11 million. Marseille already had a strong squad with the likes of Patrice Evra, Dimitri Payet, Remy Cabella, Lucas Ocampos and Morgan Sanson. On home soil, Marseille are currently on a ten-game winning streak across all competitions, winning nine in the process.

Marseille Team News

Henri Bedimo and Rod Fanni are both doubts ahead of this tie.

Dijon Preview

On the other hand, Dijon have endured a mixed run of form in the pre-season, registering three defeats, two wins and one draw in the pre-season. The bad news is that Dijon have failed to score in three of their last four friendlies. Dijon barely avoided relegation last term as they finished in 16th, just one point above the drop zone. I’m expecting them to struggle this year as well as they have had a horrible summer transfer campaign so far. They have sold two of their last season’s best players in the shape of Lois Diony and Pierre Lees Melou for a total fee of €14m and only brought in three mediocre players. Wesley Lautoa came from FC Lorient for €1.5m, Wesley Said from Rennes for €1.5m and Cedric Yambere from Bordeaux for €500,000. Lois Diony has played a crucial role in Dijon’s performance last term as he has been involved in 19 of Dijon’s goals, registering eleven goals and eight assists. He will be sorely missed, particularly against a Marseille side who kept eight clean sheets in the last 15 games. Head-to-head, Dijon have only won once in their four meetings with Marseille, but the good news is that they have scored at least once in each of these.

Dijon Team News

Yohan Riviere is the only doubtful player for Dijon ahead of this trip.
