Maribor vs Spartak Moscow Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Maribor will be looking to kick off their Champions League group stage adventure in a positive manner when they welcome Spartak Moscow at the Ljudski vrt Stadium on Wednesday night. Maribor only managed a nil-nil home draw against Celje in the Prva liga at the weekend, while Spartak Moscow beat Rubin Kazan 1-0 in the Russian Premier League thanks to a second-half goal from Quincy Promes. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

It’s pretty difficult to separate these two teams, but I’m going with the in-form team in this one, which is Maribor. The Slovenians have only lost once in their 15 competitive games so far this season, while Spartak have only won one of their last four games across all competitions. The Both Teams to Score market doesn’t have too much value as Spartak looked poor in front of goal recently, while Maribor have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four games across all competitions. I think that Maribor should be able to secure at least a draw in this one, as they have enjoyed a great run of form at home, both domestically and in Europe. Here are our two best predictions for this game:

Maribor or Draw (Double Chance 1x) at 10/11

Asian Handicap +0.5, +1 on Maribor at 7/10

Maribor have conceeded only 1 goals in their last 1 games against Spartak Moscow

Maribor Preview

Maribor have been dominating the Slovenian football over the past seven years, having won the Prva liga title six times in this term. They were the runner-ups to Olimpija Ljubljana in 2016, but they managed to win the title once again last season with 13 points clear of Olimpija. They have played three qualifying ties to reach the Champions League group stages, beating the likes of Zrinjski, Hafnarfjordur and Hapoel Beer Sheva. Maribor are now in the group stage of the competition for a third time, having previously competed in 1999/2000 and 2014/15. Last season, Maribor were beaten by Gabala in the Europa League play-offs, despite the fact that they beat Levski Sofia and Aberdeen in qualifying. Maribor kicked off their competitive 2017/18 season in a strong manner, having lost just once in their 15 games across all competitions. They are undefeated in eight games in the Prva liga so far this season and find themselves in second spot, just two points of the current leaders NK Olimpija Ljubljana. At home, Maribor are undefeated in eight competitive games so far this season, conceding just three goals in the process. Their Champions League home record over the past three years have seen Maribor lose just once in their last seven home games.

Maribor Team News

Amir Dervisevic is the only doubtful player for Maribor ahead of this tie.

Spartak Moscow Preview

After a couple of Russian Premier League season which has seen they finish in fifth and sixth places, Spartak Moscow managed to win the title last year for the first time since 2001. It was a tremendous achievement for coach Massimo Carrera in his first campaign in charge. The 53-year-old manager was previously assistant to Antonio Conte at Juventus and the Italian national team. However, things aren’t going very well for Spartak Moscow in this early part of their Russian Premier League campaign, as they have only won three of their nine league games. However, they should feel confident ahead of this game as they managed to beat Rubin Kazan 1-0 at the weekend to end their three-game winless streak in the Russian Premier League. Away from home, Spartak are winless in six league games, having conceded at least two goals in four of these. Regarding their Champions League record, Spartak Moscow are now in the group stage for the 12th time and the first time since 2012/13. The bad news is that the Russians are without a victory in their last seven European games, home and away. In addition, they haven’t won a single game on the road since a narrow 1-0 win at Ajax in the first leg of their 2010/11 Europa League round of 16.

Spartak Moscow Team News

Serdar Tasci, Artem Timofeev and Roman Zobnin are all missing through injury ahead of this trip.
