Maribor vs Sevilla Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Sevilla will be aiming to book their place into the Champions League round of 16 when they travel to the Ljudski vrt to take on Maribor on Wednesday night. Maribor managed to secure an unexpected 1-1 away draw at Spartak Moscow last time out in the Champions League thanks to a stoppage-time equalizer from Jasmin Mesanovic. Meanwhile, Sevilla managed one of the biggest comebacks of the Champions League group stage history, as they fought back from three goals down to secure a 3-3 home draw against Liverpool. Wissam Ben Yedder netted a brace within the space of nine minutes, while Guido Pizarro scored the equalizer in the stoppage time. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Sevilla are hot favourites to win here despite their poor run of form away from home. This is because that they are in dire need of a victory here, while Maribor have already been kicked out from the competition. I fancy Sevilla to win regardless their terrible away form, but I don’t expect too many goals.

Maribor Preview

Maribor have endured a mixed run of form over the past month, registering three defeats, two draws and three victories in their last eight competitive fixtures. Regarding their Champions League group stage campaign, Maribor only managed two 1-1 draws against Spartak Moscow so far, which leaves them bottom of the group E table with just two points under their belts. Their sloppy defence has been the main reason for their struggle throughout this group stage campaign, as they conceded 15 goals in five rounds. The Slovens got thrashed 0-7 at home by Liverpool in their most recent Champions League home fixture, but they were unbeaten in five games prior to that. Actually, Maribor have kept three clean sheets in their last six home games in the Champions League. Domestically, Maribor have enjoyed another solid campaign as they currently sit at the top of the Prva liga table with 43 points after 18 rounds, three points clear of the second-placed NK Olimpija Ljubljana. Marcos Tavares is a player to watch here as he is the team’s topscorer in the Prva liga with eight goals under his belt and he also managed to score four throughout this Champions League campaign.

Maribor Team News

Luka Zahovic, Denis Sme and Matko Obradovic are all doubts, but Aleksandr Rajcevic and Jasmin Mesanovic are both missing through injury.

Sevilla Preview

Sevilla have only lost once in their last nine competitive fixtures and enter the fray on the back of a five-game unbeaten streak. They looked incredibly solid in front of goal during this run, having scored at least two goals in each of their last five games across all competitions. The Spaniards managed an excellent 3-3 draw against Liverpool last time out in the Champions League and they now are just one victory away from the Champions League round of 16. Sevilla did well to score eleven goals throughout this group stage campaign, but they have also conceded eleven in the process. Wissam Ben Yedder has played a pivotal role in Maribor’s performance throughout this Champions League group stage campaign as he is the qualifying’s second topscorer with six goals under his belt. The most worrying fact is that Sevilla aren’t regarded as good travellers in the Champions League, having won just twice in their last nine outings. Regarding their La Liga campaign, Sevilla find themselves 5th in the standings tied on 28 points with the 4th-placed Real Madrid and are already eight points adrift of the current leaders Barcelona.

Sevilla Team News

Nicolas Pareja and Daniel Carrico are both out through injury, while Jose Mena Rodriguez is a doubt. The good news is that Walter Montoya is back in training following his groin injury.
