Manchester United vs West Ham United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United host West Ham United at Old Trafford on 13/08/17 as Jose Mourinho’s men begin what they hope will be a title-winning season. There will be immense pressure on the hosts to start well this term, but the away side will have their eyes on an upset after some decent business in the transfer window. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Jose Mourinho has lost just one home match in the Premier League as Manchester United manager, although they were held to draws on ten occasions last season. Romelu Lukaku relished playing West Ham in his Everton days and I’m expecting him to get on the scoresheet and to fire United to their first three points of the season.

Manchester United Preview

Although Manchester United weren’t able to get their hands on the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday evening, there were plenty of positives that Jose Mourinho could take from the fixture after losing 2-1 to Real Madrid. The result and game was more of a reflection of the different level Madrid currently find themselves at in the grand scheme of things, rather than United being particularly under-par. Following their disappointing 6th-placed finish last season - which was ultimately compensated for after winning the Europa League - Mourinho and the club’s supporters will be expecting a significant title challenge this term, something they haven’t managed since last winning it in 2013. Just as was the case last season, the title race is being tipped as a battle of the Manchester clubs, both of which have strengthened again during the off-season and United will hope to exceed the standards set by their rivals earlier in the weekend when they kick off on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester United Team News

Marcos Rojo (cruciate ligament), Luke Shaw (ankle) and Ashley Young (hamstring) are all absent for the home side through injury. Romelu Lukaku will make his Old Trafford debut as a United player.

West Ham United Preview

West Ham appear to have learned their lesson from last summer’s disastrous transfer window by sticking to signing players who will strictly improve their first XI, as opposed to bulking the squad with bodies. Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez could all make their debuts for Slaven Bilic’s side this weekend and the squad looks far more balanced after getting rid of much of the dead wood. For Hernandez in particular this will be a special moment, having made his name at United during a four-season spell at Old Trafford from 2010. After having a season to settle in at the London Stadium, eventually finishing 11th despite having the 16th worst home record in the league, expectations should rise this time around following their settling in period. That said, they will need to raise their levels from the pre-season after winning just one of their six friendlies.

West Ham United Team News

Cheikhou Kouyate (knee), Michail Antonio (hamstring) and Andy Carroll (groin) are all missing for the visitors. Mark Noble (ankle) and Manuel Lanzini (knee) should be available despite knocks.
