Manchester United vs Sunderland Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United host Sunderland at Old Trafford on 26/12/16 as David Moyes makes his first return to United as a manager since his ill-fated spell in 2013/14. Both sides come into this game off the back of wins, after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s double condemned West Brom to a 2-0 defeat at the Hawthorns, while Patrick van Aanholt’s strike lifted Sunderland off the bottom of the Premier League in a 1-0 win over Watford. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Man United Preview

Manchester United won their fourth game on the bounce in all competitions on Saturday evening, beating West Brom 2-0 away from home - as Jose Mourinho’s men extended their unbeaten run to ten matches in all competitions. Ibrahimovic’s brace made it ten goals in nine appearances for the big Swede, who has had no issues adapting to life in the Premier League, even at thirty-five years of age. For Jose Mourinho, he will be delighted to see the way in which his team have now begun to turn performances into regular points, although they still sit a huge thirteen points behind leaders Chelsea. Paul Pogba has impressed in a midfield three alongside Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, with the balance in United’s midfield now suiting the Frenchman’s attributes. At Old Trafford, United are unbeaten in their previous eleven outings, last losing 2-1 at home to Manchester City, which remains their only defeat on home turf in all competitions this term. Wayne Rooney still remains just one goal away from tying Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record at the club and will be targeting this as a fixture where he can achieve that accomplishment.

Sunderland Preview

Sunderland bounced back from two successive defeats with a crucial 1-0 win over Watford - a result which lifted Moyes’ men from the foot of the Premier League table. With both Hull and Swansea crashing to defeats away from home, it was essential that the Black Cats picked up three points here and they did so here through full-back van Aanholt. Starting with the Victor Anichebe, Fabio Borini and Jermain Defoe in attack, Sunderland’s intent was clear from the outset as they knew they had to win to make up for a disappointing week which had preceded it. Picking up just four points from their eight away games this term, Moyes’ side have lost two their two on the road without scoring, conceding five in doing so. Now just a point behind Crystal Palace in the table, they are within touching distance of finally getting out of the bottom three and there is a much more positive feeling surrounding the club at this moment in time. With four wins and three defeats in their last seven matches, there has been a marked improvement on Wearside in recent weeks and a genuine feeling that they can now escape relegation once again this term.

Man United Team News

Eric Bailly (knee) and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (ankle) are both set to miss out for United in this one. Luke Shaw (leg) is a doubt, with Jose Mourinho - barring any more injuries - set to name an unchanged lineup for this clash.

Sunderland Team News

Jan Kirchhoff (knee), Paddy McNair (cruciate ligament), Lee Cattermole (hip), Lynden Gooch (ankle) and Duncan Watmore (cruciate ligament) are all long-term absentees. Javier Manquillo (hamstring), Billy Jones (hip) and Steven Pienaar (calf) are doubts, although Jack Rodwell (hamstring) could return.

Betting Tips and Predictions

After some encouraging signs in recent weeks, United are now beginning to pick up points on a regular basis and are beginning to apply pressure on those above them. Unbeaten at home in their previous eleven games at home, it’s difficult to envisage Sunderland being the side that will come to Old Trafford and break that streak, and I’m expecting a home victory in this one.
