Manchester United vs Stoke City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United face Stoke City at Old Trafford on 15/01/18 as the home team look to make a small gain on leaders Manchester City. United won 2-0 against Derby County in the FA Cup last time out, while Stoke fell to a 2-1 loss to Coventry City. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Stoke are in a real mess at the moment, with Martin O’Neill the latest to turn down their offer of taking the manager’s job. United meanwhile will have been buoyed by Man City’s loss the day before and I’m expecting them to secure a victory here.

Man United win to nil - 10/11
Jesse Lingard to score anytime - 5/4

Manchester United Preview

It feels an age since Manchester United last featured, having enjoyed a 10-day break since beating Derby County 2-0 in the third round of the FA Cup. An unconvincing performance saw Jose Mourinho’s men be forced to wait until the 84th minute to find the breakthrough, as Jesse Lingard continued his excellent form with a superb strike from the edge of the box. Romelu Lukaku wrapped up the victory in stoppage time from a swift counter-attack as United set up a fourth round tie away to League Two side Yeovil Town. Currently 15 points behind leaders Manchester City prior to this game, they will now hope to close the gap to 12 following City’s 4-3 defeat away to Liverpool on Sunday, though they are still a long way off catching their rivals. Had they not drawn three in a row before beating Everton 2-0 in their previous league outing, United would have the opportunity to half the current gap to just six points, leaving City with little reason to panic and worry about a late surge against them. With the signing of Alexis Sanchez reportedly imminent at United, it may well open the door for a move away from Old Trafford for midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was hooked after 45 minutes in his last outing for United.

Manchester United Team News

Ashley Young is suspended, while Eric Bailly (ankle) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (knee) are out injured. Antonio Valencia (hamstring) is a doubt.

Stoke City Preview

The wheels have really come off at Stoke City, who enter this game without a permanent manager, in the relegation zone and out of the FA Cup following a 2-1 defeat to League Two outfit Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena. Form alone ensured this fixture had the look of a potential banana skin and so that proved to be the case, once Jordan Willis put Coventry ahead going into half-time. Charlie Adam’s second-half penalty pulled the Potters level, but Jack Grimmer’s goal sealed the fate of Mark Hughes, who received his marching orders shortly after the full-time whistle. Finding a replacement for the Welshman has been easier said than done, with Martin O'Neill being the third of their top three managerial targets to turn down the opportunity to take on the job, joining Gary Rowett and Quique Sanchez Flores in rejecting Stoke. Also coming into this game off the back of three straight defeats in all competitions and a point from safety, it’s easy to see why the Stoke job is currently viewed as a far from attractive proposition for potential managerial targets. Not only will they hope to bring in a new manager, but new personnel on the field could also be on the agenda, making the hurry for an appointment all the more imperative.

Stoke City Team News

Glen Johnson (knee), Ryan Shawcross (calf), Bruno Martins Indi (groin) and Erik Pieters (hamstring) are all set to miss out on Monday night.
