Given the manner of their defeat at Chelsea, Jose Mourinho will be demanding a response from his players this weekend. I’m expecting them to provide it and come away with the three points in this one.

Manchester United Preview

Jose Mourinho failed to win at former stomping ground Stamford Bridge for the third time as Manchester United manager a fortnight ago, this time slipping to a 1-0 loss after an underwhelming performance. Mourinho sprang no real surprises in his initial approach to the game, playing pragmatically as they looked to hit the Blues on the counter-attack but Alvaro Morata’s header from Cesar Azpilicueta’s cross left them chasing the game. Mourinho did at least go for it from there, having Romelu Lukaku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial all on the pitch at the same time for the first time this season, but they were unable to break down a stubborn Chelsea defence. With Manchester City winning earlier that afternoon, United are now eight points adrift of Pep Guardiola’s men after 11 matches, also trailing them by 13 on goal difference. Striker Lukaku returned from the previous international break out of sorts, going seven games without a goal in all competitions following the previous break and will be looking to end that drought this time around. United come into this fixture with five home Premier League wins in five games, all of which have come without conceding a single goal.

Manchester United Team News

Paul Pogba (hamstring) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (knee) are both in contention to return to the squad this weekend. Phil Jones (thigh) will be assessed but Marcos Rojo (knee) won’t be ready to return in time.

Newcastle United Preview

Rafa Benitez renews an old rivalry this weekend in need of a result, having seen his team head into the international break off the back of two successive 1-0 defeats in the Premier League. Having lost to Burnley the Monday before, Newcastle welcomed Bournemouth to St. James’ Park with a point to prove and performed relatively well, though once again the lack of a prolific striker came back to haunt them. With it seeming as if both would settle for a point, Steve Cook headed past Rob Elliot in the 92nd minute as Newcastle dropped to the bottom half of the table with the defeat. Overall, Benitez’s men have won just one of their previous six Premier League games, with their only victory in recent weeks coming at home to bottom-of-the-table Crystal Palace. Improving their away form is also important, having won just one of their last sixteen away Premier League matches, stretching back to December 2015 in their previous full season in the top flight. The fact remains that there is huge potential for Benitez to build something special at Newcastle, but with the squad as presently constructed, is ultimately lacking the requisite quality.

Newcastle United Team News

Mikel Merino (back) is ruled out for Newcastle, while Jamaal Lascelles (ankle) and Christian Atsu (thigh) are both doubtful.
