Manchester United vs Newcastle United Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Manchester United had one of the disappointing performances of the campaign as they lost 3-1 against West Ham. Goals from Felipe Anderson and a wicked deflection off Victor Lindelof were able to put West Ham in a commanding position before Marcus Rashford pulled one back from the set piece. Arnautovic almost immediately gave West Ham’s third goal of the evening. United went on to get a goalless draw with Valencia at Old Trafford in the Champions League. Newcastle lost for a fourth consecutive game at home as they lost 2-0 to Leicester. Jamie Vardy’s opening goal and Harry Maguire’s second-half goal were able to give a comfortable win for Leicester.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

A number of teams have been able to wrestle points off Manchester United by taking advantage of the infighting and uncertainty. However, Newcastle may not be in a position to take advantage of such elements, as they have been poor in almost every regard. Jose Mourinho has been made as the bookies favourite to get the sack and widespread rumours hint that anything other than a win this weekend would see the Portuguese leave Old Trafford. Yet, such desperate times may actually bring out a win for United. However, both teams are low on confidence and this is likely to end up producing a low scoring match.

Newcastle have been able to score just once on the road this season. Despite Jose Mourinho’s open criticism about United’s central defensive pairing, the Red Devils have a decent defensive record in recent weeks and were able to keep a clean sheet in two out of the last five games. I would go with a clean sheet for United largely due to Newcastle’s struggles.

Manchester United Preview

Make no mistake, Manchester United are club in crisis. The Red Devils have picked up just three wins in the last nine competitive games. More worrying for manager Jose Mourinho is that his players are giving little effort on the pitch. United players have made the lowest number of sprints (above an average of 25 km/h) and the team has spent only 26% possession in the opposition third (compare that with the 37% possession held by Manchester City in the opposition half). Mourinho has not exactly helped the mood at United by his direct confrontation and singling out players. There are visible signs of the Portuguese having lost his dressing room.

Manchester United Team News

Marcos Rojo (knee) and Jesse Lingard (groin) are the players unavailable for United.

Newcastle United Preview

Rafa Benitez continues to hold the love of Newcastle supporters; most of the anger has been directed towards owner Mike Ashley and the club’s transfer policy. Newcastle have had a disastrous opening to the 2018-19 campaign with the team sitting bottom of the pile in terms of metrics like shots per game and possession. There is little going for Newcastle to suggest that the club would make a jump up the league table. Benitez may be holding high hopes in the fixtures coming up after the international break, as potential six-pointers can make or break their campaign.

Newcastle United Team News

Federico Fernandez (hamstring), Salomon Rondon (thigh), Paul Dummett (hamstring), and Florian Lejeune (cruciate ligament) are unavailable for Newcastle.
