Manchester United vs Middlesbrough Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United host Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on 31/12/16 as Jose Mourinho’s men look to continue their recent winning run in the Premier League. United swept Sunderland aside 3-1 at Old Trafford on Boxing Day to keep the gap between themselves and the top four at four points. Middlesbrough meanwhile were dealt a blow, losing 1-0 at relegation rivals Burnley who leapfrogged them in the table. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Man United Preview

Manchester United made it five wins on the bounce in all competitions last time out, fulfilling what was expected of them with a 3-1 defeat of Sunderland. Daley Blind’s clinical finish made it 1-0, before Zlatan Ibrahimovic tucked away Paul Pogba’s perfectly-weighted pass to make it 2-0. Then came two goals out of the ordinary, first from Henrikh Mkhitaryan's ludicrously skilful scorpion kick, while Fabio Borini’s volley helped restore some pride for David Moyes on his first return to Old Trafford since his sacking in 2014. United are now eleven games unbeaten in all competitions since losing 2-1 away to Fenerbahce in the Europa League and haven’t lost in their last nine in the Premier League since the humiliating 4-0 loss at Chelsea. Also winning their last four in the league in a row, it’s been an enjoyable December for Jose Mourinho, who would’ve enjoyed a perfect month had it not been for Marouane Fellaini giving away a late penalty to draw 1-1 with Everton and cost them two extra points. Paul Pogba is now showing signs of being an excellent fit in this team and looks a much better fit in a midfield three alongside Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera. Ibrahimovic is also well and truly back in the goals, netting eleven times in his last ten games for United - surprising most by missing just one Premier League game all year.

Juan Mata to score first 7/1

Middlesbrough Preview

Middlesbrough’s away woes went on last time out, losing their second successive match on the road by a 1-0 scoreline. This time it was fellow relegation rivals Burnley who were side to get the better of them in a clash in difficult conditions, with Andre Grey volleying in from Sam Vokes’ knockdown in the game’s only goal. Boro are now without an away win in their last eight games on their travels since beating Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in their first road game of the season. Since then, five draws and three defeats have followed, although it must be noted some of those draws were admirable results. Boro have held both Arsenal and Manchester City to draws at the Emirates and Etihad respectively, as well as twice leading before drawing 2-2 against champions Leicester City. There is a real resilience about the squad Aitor Karanka has assembled at the Riverside Stadium and they must rely on their teamwork if they are to stay out of the bottom three. They may also need to recruit some attacking reinforcements, currently holding the league’s joint-second worst attacking record, netting only sixteen times in eighteen appearances.

Man United Team News

Luke Shaw (groin) and Wayne Rooney (thigh) are both doubts for United, as is Eric Bailly (knee). Henrikh Mkhitaryan will hope to start after his wonder goal last time out after coming from the bench.

Middlesbrough Team News

Viktor Fischer (knee) is ruled out until mid-January for Middlesbrough. Daniel Ayala (ankle) remains a doubt, with Calum Chambers and Ben Gibson both set to continue in defence.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester United seem to now have the feel for winning football matches and are looking more and more like a Jose Mourinho side. Although Middlesbrough have caused some shocks at the homes of the bigger boys this season, I’m not expecting them to be able to stop United making it six wins on the bounce in this one.
