Manchester United vs Hull City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United host Hull City at Old Trafford on 01/02/17 as Jose Mourinho’s men look to maintain their unbeaten run of form in the Premier League. United were consummately professional as they comfortably saw off Wigan Athletic with a 4-0 win in the FA Cup. Hull, meanwhile, were embarrassed and turned over by Fulham in the same competition, going down 4-1 at Craven Cottage. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Man United Preview

Manchester United cruised past Wigan at Old Trafford on Sunday, although they were made to wait until the 44th minute for the breakthrough to arrive. Marouane Fellaini headed in Bastian Schweinsteiger’s cross to kick off the scoring. Chris Smalling then doubled their lead shortly after half-time, before Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Schweinsteiger both got on the scoresheet in the final fifteen minutes of the tie. United have played twice in cup competitions since their last game, including the 2-1 defeat away to Wednesday’s opponents Hull in the EFL Cup. That defeat ended a run of almost three months without a defeat for Jose Mourinho’s side, who are still fourteen points behind leaders Chelsea despite that unbeaten streak. United are without a win in their last two Premier League games, having drawn 1-1 with both Liverpool and Stoke, meaning this game represents the opportunity for them to win their first Premier League game in almost a month. Currently four points off the top four, Mourinho will see this as a game his side simply have to win if they are to remain in touch with those above them and apply serious pressure on the teams occupying those places. Zlatan Ibrahimovic has scored fourteen Premier League goals so far this season, and he too will be looking at this as a game where he will feel he can add to that impressive tally.

Hull Preview

Hull were dumped out of the FA Cup in embarrassing fashion on Sunday, losing 4-1 to Championship outfit Fulham away from home as they were eliminated from two cup competitions in four days. Ex-Hull man Sone Aluko opened the scoring in the first half for Slavisa Jokanovic’s men, but new signing Evandro levelled the scores just after half-time. But Hull were level for just five minutes, as Chris Martin restored Fulham’s lead, with Ryan Sessegnon and Stefan Johansen ensuring it would be a heavy defeat for the Premier League outfit. New manager Marco Silva has generally been considered by most to have had a positive impact on this team, with this the first significant blow he has suffered in England. Their record in their last six games reads WLWLWL, and they certainly wouldn’t mind that particular trend continuing in this one. Having beaten United 2-1 at home in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, the Tigers will take undoubtedly have taken great confidence from that result and will believe they have the capability of competing with United. However, with nine defeats in a row away from home to their name, it looks as if this will be a huge uphill task for them to overcome.

Man United Team News

Eric Bailly (ankle) is a doubt for Manchester United. Other than the Ivorian, United have no new injury concerns, with Mourinho set to bring the likes of David De Gea, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all back into the starting XI.

Hull Team News

Curtis Davies (hamstring), Moses Odubajo (knee), Ryan Mason (skull fracture), Markus Henriksen (shoulder) and Will Keane (cruciate ligament) are all ruled out for Hull. Michael Dawson (knock) and Harry Maguire (knee) are doubts, while Ahmed Elmohamady and Dieumerci Mbokani are both away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester United have looked strong at home in recent weeks and were pretty comfortable in their last meeting with Hull at Old Trafford. Especially given Hull’s recent away record, I’m expecting United to win this game particularly comfortably this time around.
