Manchester United vs Derby County Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester United welcome Derby County to Old Trafford on 05/01/18 as the hosts look to avoid another cup exit to Championship opposition. United got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Everton on Monday, while Derby drew 1-1 at home to Sheffield United last time out.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Defeating Everton will have resulted in a real confidence boost for United, who were in huge need for a victory in the Premier League. Derby have performed well in the Championship this season, but I’m not expecting them to have enough to compete with United here.

Manchester United Preview

Jose Mourinho could breathe a somewhat underwhelming sigh of relief on Monday evening after seeing his side bring their recent slump to an end with a 2-0 victory at Goodison Park over Everton. With no Romelu Lukaku or Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the starting XI, Mourinho elected to go with Anthony Martial as the lone striker, and the Frenchman repaid the faith shown in him by scoring the opening goal of the game just before the hour mark. Jesse Lingard also continued his excellent form by scoring the decisive goal with a fantastic solo effort, as his rapid improvement this season goes on. Prior to those three points at Goodison Park, United had gone four games without a win in all competitions, as their shocking defeat to Bristol City in the EFL Cup was followed up by three consecutive draws against Leicester, Burnley and Southampton. With the Premier League title race now all but over with Manchester City going fifteen points clear at the summit of the table, making the FA Cup an even greater priority for Mourinho as he looks to justify this as a successful season. With two 4-0 wins in their last two FA Cup home games against Championship opposition, they have a track record of convincing victories in this competition and will expect to continue that trend here.

Manchester United Team News

Antonio Valencia (hamstring), Eric Bailly (ankle), Marouane Fellaini, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) and Romelu Lukaku (head) all find themselves on United’s injury list. Ashley Young is suspended.

Derby County Preview

Derby sustained their challenge for promotion to the Premier League this season after drawing 1-1 at home to Sheffield United in their last Championship outing to leave themselves 2nd in the table. Matej Vydra put the Rams in front after 24 minutes in the clash at the iPro Stadium, netting his 14th goal of the season from the penalty spot to leave them ahead going into the break. However, it wasn’t to last as Leon Clarke equalised just over ten minutes into the second half, leaving Derby to settle for a point and ultimately drop 12 points behind current runaway leaders Wolves. Derby have proved to be the nearly men over recent years in the Championship, making the playoffs in two of their last four seasons and have achieved a top-nine finish in each of those campaigns. Unbeaten in their last seven games with five wins and two draws, confidence is likely to be high amongst the Derby squad, who have recovered extremely well from a slow start to the season to become serious contenders for promotion. Conceding just 23 goals in 26 Championship games so far, manager Gary Rowett has done an excellent job in making this team more difficult to beat and will see this as an excellent chance to get a morale-boosting scalp.

Derby County Team News

Joe Ledley (back) looks set to miss out once more for Derby.
