By Dean Carr

Manchester United host Benfica at Old Trafford on 31/10/17 as the home team look to confirm their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. United beat Tottenham 1-0 in the Premier League at the weekend, while Benfica were 1-0 winners over Feirense in their previous outing. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Benfica don’t look to be the challenge they have been in recent years in Europe and with United making light work of this group so far, I’m expecting this to be a comfortable home win.

Manchester United Preview

Jose Mourinho will have been delighted with the statement victory his team produced at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 to stay 2nd in the Premier League. It was a far from vintage performance from the Red Devils, who went in at half-time the more frustrated of the two sides as Spurs dominated, though not to any tangible outcome. Instead, substitute Anthony Martial produced the game’s decisive moment, scoring the only goal of the game with less than ten minutes remaining after latching onto Romelu Lukaku’s headed flick. With a visit of Chelsea to come next weekend, it was vitally important that United came away from the weekend’s fixture with maximum points, or face a trip to Stamford Bridge with an eight-point deficit to leaders Manchester City. It’s been plain sailing for United in the Champions League so far with three wins from three so far, scoring eight and conceding just once. United will be full of confidence given their recent form at Old Trafford in Europe, winning eight and drawing two of their last ten games in this competition at home, with Real Madrid being the last side to win away to United in Europe in March 2013.

Manchester United Team News

Paul Pogba (hamstring), Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) are all absent for United. Michael Carrick (knock) is a doubt.

Benfica Preview

Benfica made it successive wins in the Portuguese Liga at the weekend after successfully overcoming the challenge of mid-table side Feirense on Friday evening. With the result never really in doubt, Benfica’s winning goal took just 11 minutes to arrive as striker Jonas netted the game’s only goal to leave them five points behind league leaders Porto at this moment in time. In total it’s now just one defeat in five matches for Benfica - with that loss coming against United during their previous meeting in Portugal a fortnight ago. That game will unfortunately become synonymous with young goalkeeper Mile Svilar and his nightmare of a mistake, which ultimately resulted in the three points going the way of Mourinho’s men. He will likely be given the opportunity to atone for his error this coming Tuesday, with United expected to be the dominant side for the majority of this game. It’s been a disastrous start to this European campaign for Benfica, who currently sit bottom of Group A and defeat here would ensure they will not be playing Champions League football post-Christmas.

Benfica Team News

Luisao misses out through suspension, while fellow defenders Jardel and Douglas are doubts through injury.
