Manchester City Preview

Progression to the fifth round of the FA Cup may have been secured, but the main talking point of Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Cardiff came via a rash challenge rather than their performance. Kevin de Bruyne struck his free-kick beneath the Cardiff wall to put City 1-0 up after just eight minutes, before Raheem Sterling headed home Bernardo Silva’s inch-perfect cross to double their lead before the break. However, Leroy Sane suffered ankle ligament damage after a cynical foul from Joe Bennett, leaving the German facing up to six weeks on the sidelines. At the time of writing, it remains to be seen whether or not City will look to bring in a replacement for Sane over the next few weeks, or if they will instead continue with what they’ve got. Now returning to the Etihad and Premier League commitments, Pep Guardiola will be hoping to see his side extend their winning streak at home to 12 consecutive games, having won their last 11 before Wednesday night. Everton remain the only side to have taken points off of City at the Etihad Stadium this season, while Guardiola will also be boastful at the fact his team went the entirety of 2017 unbeaten at home. In the mix for all four major honours this season, this could turn into a historic campaign for Manchester City if they are able to maintain their current form.

Manchester City Team News

Benjamin Mendy, Fabian Delph and Gabriel Jesus are all out with knee injuries, while Leroy Sane (ankle) is also facing a spell on the sidelines.

West Bromwich Albion Preview

The shock of the FA Cup fourth round came courtesy of West Bromwich Albion on Saturday night after the Baggies stunned Liverpool with a 3-2 victory at Anfield. Roberto Firmino chipped the Reds in front after just five minutes following a defensive mixup between Jonny Evans and Ben Foster, but Jay Rodriguez’s quick brace put the away side back in front. Matt Phillips’ low drive was turned in by Joel Matip to make it 3-1 at the break, and despite relentless pressure from Liverpool and a Mohamed Salah strike, West Brom held on to progress to the next round, now facing Southampton at The Hawthorns. Now going unbeaten in their last four with three wins, West Brom have shown how playing a strong side in the cup and winning can breed confidence, taking four points from six in their last two league games. Currently three points adrift of safety, this may not be a game in which they target maximum points from, though few would’ve given them much of a chance against Liverpool on Saturday. It appears the Baggies will hold onto key defender Jonny Evans for the remainder of the season, after seeing off interest from Manchester City and Arsenal for him, while they have also strengthened their attacking options with the loan signing of Daniel Sturridge.

West Bromwich Albion Team News

Kieran Gibbs, Jonny Evans and Hal Robson-Kanu are all doubts with hamstring problems. Gareth McAuley (illness), James Morrison (achilles) and Nacer Chadli (hip) are all set to miss out.
