Manchester City vs Swansea City Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester City host Swansea City at the Etihad Stadium on 05/02/17 as both sides look to maintain their decent run of form in the Premier League. City were excellent last time out as they demolished West Ham United 4-0 at the London Stadium. Swansea, too, enjoyed similar success in midweek, earning a potentially huge 2-1 win over Southampton at the Liberty Stadium. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Man City Preview

Manchester City showed form reminiscent of their blistering, ten-match winning start under Pep Guardiola for the second time at West Ham this season, after an attacking masterclass saw the Hammers off 4-0 at the London Stadium. Kevin De Bruyne opened the scoring seventeen minutes into the game, before David Silva strengthened City’s hold on the game by adding a second just four minutes later. Gabriel Jesus tapped in at the far post to sign off his full City debut with a goal, while Yaya Toure’s penalty after half-time completed the rout for the away side. It proved to be a fantastic midweek schedule for Manchester City, who were the only side in the top six to pick up three points. Chelsea, Spurs, Liverpool and Man United all drew, while Arsenal were shocked with a defeat at home to Watford. Despite this, City have won a relatively below-par two of their previous five Premier League matches, although there is a very distinct possibility that they may end the weekend in the top four should they pick up three points here. Guardiola has lost just once at home in the Premier League since taking over in the summer, although draws have ultimately cost them, with four stalemates at the Etihad this term.

Swansea Preview

Swansea won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season when they beat Southampton 2-1 at the Liberty Stadium. New boss Paul Clement has given the club a real lift since arriving at the beginning of January, with the club winning three of their four league matches since he arrived. They were put in front by defender Alfie Mawson who converted from Gylfi Sigurdsson’s set-piece - a factor which are set to be crucial for their survival hopes this term. Although Shane Long restored parity in the second half, Sigurdsson got on the scoresheet himself to seal the three points for the Welsh outfit, who are now sat two points above the relegation zone in 17th. Clement has brought real optimism to the Liberty Stadium and they are now level on points with both Leicester City and Middlesbrough above them in 16th and 15th, respectively. The likes of Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente have received a real lift from their new manager and both have the potential to be a source of goals which realistically keeps them in the Premier League. Should Swansea pull off a shock and win here, it would be the first time they have won three league games on the bounce since May 2015.

Man City Team News

Ilkay Gundogan (cruciate ligament) is set to miss the rest of the season through injury. John Stones (head) will be assessed, meaning Vincent Kompany could return after recovering from his knee problem.

Swansea Team News

Jefferson Montero (hamstring) remains Swansea’s only injury absentee. After another victory midweek, Paul Clement is set to name an unchanged lineup for the second game in succession.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester City have looked excellent in their last two outings, winning comfortably in each without conceding. As much as Swansea have improved in recent weeks, City look as if they’re entering a good place mentally and I’m expecting them to pick up a comfortable victory here.
