Manchester City Preview

As far as statements go, Manchester City made a pretty grand and emphatic one away to reigning champions Chelsea last time out, winning 1-0 at Stamford Bridge with an outstanding performance. City controlled the game from the first minute, with Chelsea’s tentative tactics playing right into their hands. Despite that, it took 67 minutes for the breakthrough to come, but it was well worth the wait as Kevin De Bruyne smashed the ball past Thibaut Courtois from the edge of the box to secure arguably City’s most impressive result of the season so far. It’s been an outstanding start to this campaign once again for City, who have made a habit of quick starts in recent seasons without being able to maintain that form for a significant title challenge. Pep Guardiola’s arrival proved to be relatively underwhelming last season, but the Spaniard looks especially motivated and relaxed in recent weeks, having now had a full season of the Premier League under his belt. City have won both of their last two home games 5-0, and with Manchester United facing a difficult test away to Liverpool this weekend, will be hoping they can put breathing space between themselves and their rivals should they drop points at Anfield.

Manchester City Team News

Benjamin Mendy (cruciate ligament) and Sergio Aguero (broken rib) are both long-term doubts for City. Vincent Kompany (calf) and Fabian Delph (muscle) will be assessed before a call is made on their involvement.

Stoke City Preview

Stoke’s home victory against Southampton in their previous outing came as a welcome relief of pressure for Mark Hughes, as the Potters ended their winless run with a 2-1 win over the Saints. Mame Biram Diouf opened the scoring five minutes before half-time at the Bet365 Stadium, before Saido Berahino - chasing his first goal for the Potters - was his penalty kick saved by Fraser Forster three minutes later. It appeared they would come to regret that missed opportunity when Maya Yoshida pulled Southampton level, but Peter Crouch came from the bench to head in the winner five minutes from time, breaking the Premier League record for headed goals in doing so. Prior to their win over Southampton, Stoke had failed to win in five games in a row in all competitions and come into this game without a win away from home in the Premier League all season. Currently 13th in the table, it’s going to take a huge effort from Stoke to deny Manchester City from securing all three points here, although they will take heart from the fact that they held City to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium last season.

Stoke City Team News

Bruno Martins Indi (groin) and Stephen Ireland (broken leg) are both ruled out here. The involvement of Ryan Shawcross (back) and Joe Allen (concussion) will be judged later in the week.
