Manchester City vs Huddersfield Town Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Manchester City host Huddersfield Town at the Etihad Stadium on 01/03/17 in a fifth-round FA Cup replay after a 1-1 draw last time around. Man City were involved in an eight-goal thriller last time out, beating Monaco 5-3 in the Champions League. Huddersfield meanwhile were held to a 1-1 draw away to Yorkshire rivals Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Man City Preview

Manchester City will be hoping to extend their current unbeaten run of seven games in all competitions last time out as they beat Monaco 5-3 in a pulsating last 16 Champions League tie. Raheem Sterling put the hosts in front but they went in at the break 2-1 down after Radamel Falcao and Kevin Mbappe netted. Sergio Aguero dragged City back on level terms before Falcao’s ludicrously brilliant finish put Monaco back in front. However, Aguero, John Stones and Leroy Sane all scored in the final twenty minutes to give City a two-goal advantage going into the second leg. With just one defeat in ten games in 2017, Pep Guardiola’s are beginning to show a greater level of consistency in their play each week and will be targeting the FA Cup as a trophy they feel they can get their hands on this season. An away tie at Middlesbrough awaits the victors in the quarter-finals and City would certainly go into that potential tie as heavy favourites to book their place at Wembley in the semi-finals. Still only Chelsea have beaten City at home this season in seventeen games at the Etihad in all competitions, although City did lose their last home FA Cup tie back in January 2015, also against Championship opposition in Middlesbrough.

Huddersfield Preview

Huddersfield may not have gained the desired three points against Barnsley last time out but did come away from Oakwell having maintained a stretch of eight games unbeaten in all competitions. Defender Michael Hefele opened the scoring for Huddersfield after eighteen minutes and it seemed as if they would hold onto that lead until the closing stages of the second half. Marley Watkins ensured his side wouldn’t leave empty-handed when he equalised fifteen minutes from time, leaving the Terriers to settle for a point at the home of their Yorkshire Rivals. It was a miraculous effort from the team to earn themselves a replay in the initial tie, as their seven changes faced City’s six yet nothing could separate the two teams. David Wagner’s reputation at the John Smith’s Stadium appears to be growing by the week and a huge cup shock would only further enhance what has been an excellent season for both him and the club thus far. Away from home, they have won three and drawn one of their last four so will have no hesitancy over having to travel away here. Although securing promotion to the Premier League remains the ultimate priority for Huddersfield, the lure of a cup run must weigh heavily with a win here.

Man City Team News

Vincent Kompany (leg), Ilkay Gundogan (cruciate ligament) and Gabriel Jesus (broken foot) are all ruled out for this one. Gael Clichy (back) remains doubtful to feature in a side where changes are once again expected to be made.

Huddersfield Team News

Huddersfield have no injury concerns coming into this one. David Wagner made seven changes in the reverse fixture and it remains to be seen whether he will perform similar rotation this time around.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Manchester City will be eager to progress here in a competition they will feel they have an excellent chance of winning. Huddersfield proved to be stiff opposition last time out but a trip to the Etihad is a wholly different proposition and i’m expecting the Premier League side to progress without too much trouble here.
