Manchester City Preview

Manchester City - and Sergio Aguero in particular - were in inspired form at Watford last weekend, sending a strong message to their title rivals in a 6-0 victory. Aguero scored twice in quick succession before finding Gabriel Jesus to send Pep Guardiola’s side three goals to the good heading into half-time. Nicolas Otamendi made it 4-0 midway through the second half, before Aguero sealed his hat-trick and Raheem Sterling converted from the penalty spot in the final ten minutes of the game. City’s swashbuckling style really came to the fore at Watford, continuing the form which had preceded the game, with their six-goal haul making it fifteen goals in three matches with none conceded. Many are already proclaiming the title is destined for Manchester this term, with City and United looking the strongest two sides in the Premier League at this early stage. Guardiola’s men face arguably their toughest test of their season so far next weekend when they travel to Chelsea, a fixture which makes three points here all the more vital. City’s downfall last season proved to be dropping silly points at home, although they will take confidence from their 5-0 victory at home to Palace last season.

Manchester City Team News

Vincent Kompany (calf) is City’s only injury concern but he could return this weekend.

Crystal Palace Preview

The introduction of Roy Hodgson failed to inspire an immediate response from Crystal Palace last weekend, as they fell to a 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton in his first Premier League game in charge. So often the intention of appointing a new manager is the bounce which generally comes with it, but that was far from the case at Selhurst Park as Steven Davis’ side-footed finish gave the Saints a 6th minute lead. Although Christian Benteke had some clear-cut opportunities, the Belgian was  unable to convert as it proved to be another toothless display in front of goal for the Eagles. They are the only team without a goal in all top four divisions of English football at this stage of the season. With Hodgson coming into the club with the reputation of being a pragmatic coach, it’s going to be an extremely tough ask to turn around this current trend, with Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea being their next three league fixtures. However, they did pick up their first win under Hodgson in midweek after beating a rotated Huddersfield side 1-0.

Crystal Palace Team News

Wilfried Zaha (knee) is in contention to return to the matchday squad following injury. Connor Wickham (cruciate ligament) is a long-term doubt.
