Betting Tips and Predictions

Few would give Bristol City a prayer over two legs against by far and away the best team the country has to offer, and I’m expecting Pep Guardiola’s team to take a comfortable lead into the second leg.

Manchester City Preview

Manchester City will hope to be as successful at avoiding a cup upset on Tuesday as they were against Burnley in the FA Cup last time out, after coming from behind to beat the Clarets 4-1 to progress to the fourth round. Ashley Barnes gave Burnley the lead after 25 minutes, as they went in ahead at the break. However, a quickfire brace from Sergio Aguero brought City back to prominence, before Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva both got their names on the scoresheet to continue the winning feeling at the Etihad Stadium. The Burnley victory was City’s 15th in succession in all competitions, as they now look to make it 16 in a row by seeing off the challenge of Championship side Bristol City. Facing Lee Johnson’s men will mean that two of the four opponents Man City have faced in the EFL Cup this season have been lower-league opposition, having also faced Wolves in October, and they have required penalties twice to progress. This could so easily have been a highly-anticipated Manchester Derby had Jose Mourinho’s team not dropped to a shock defeat at Ashton Gate, and Pep Guardiola will be wary of such complacency slipping in as he looks to win his first piece of silverware as City boss.

Manchester City Team News

Benjamin Mendy (cruciate ligament), Phil Foden (ankle) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) are all ruled out. Vincent Kompany (calf) is doubtful.

Bristol City Preview

Lee Johnson’s priorities were made clear by his team selection away to Watford at the weekend, as a second-string Bristol City side failed to beat the Hornets for the second time in cup competition this season, losing 3-0 at Vicarage Road. Opi Edwards and Connor Lemonheigh-Evans were handed debuts by Johnson, but Watford took the lead just before the break through Andre Carrillo. Troy Deeney then marked his return from suspension with the second goal of the game, before Etienne Capoue rounded off the victory five minutes from time. The Robins defeated Watford away from home en route to reaching the semi-finals of the EFL Cup, with the Hornets incredibly being one of four Premier League teams put to the sword by Johnson’s side. Watford are joined by Stoke, Crystal Palace and, most famously, Manchester United in losing to the Ashton Gate outfit this term, as they now face unarguably their biggest challenge to date in the competition. Huge underdogs to progress, Bristol City now have the unenviable task of attempting to halt City’s 15-game win streak at the Etihad Stadium. However, having defeated more Premier League sides than top-flight West Bromwich Albion this season, they’ll have no fear coming into this game.

Bristol City Team News

Milan Djuric (groin) and Callum O’Dowda (ankle) are both doubts for the visitors this weekend.
