Manchester City vs Basel Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Manchester City welcome Basel at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night for the second leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie, with the Citizens being at touching distance of the quarter-finals following the first leg result. Manchester City won 0-4 in Switzerland a fortnight ago thanks to a brace from Ilkay Gundogan and two other goals from Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview. Feel free to visit our Bet of the day page to check our best daily tips.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Manchester City are undefeated in 21 home games across all competitions at the moment, winning 19 in the process. In addition, the Citizens are unbeaten in twelve Champions League home fixtures. Basel also looked solid on the road in the Champions League of late, but it’s difficult to see them coming back from a 4-0 defeat in the first leg.

Manchester City Preview

Manchester City’s sole defeat over the past month and a half came at the hands of Wigan in the FA Cup. They enter the fray on the back of a three-game winning streak across all competitions, conceding none in the process. The Citizens have had an amazing Premier League campaign so far this season as they sit comfortably at the top of the table, 18 points clear of the second-placed Liverpool. They are the league’s top scorers with 83 goals under their belts, and they also hold the joint best defensive record in the division with 20 goals conceded in 29 rounds. Their home form this season have been impeccable as they have won 19 and drawn two of their 21 competitive fixtures. The Citizens have also enjoyed a strong home form in the Champions League over the past few years, as they are undefeated in 13 European fixtures. This season, Manchester City have won their first five Champions League games before losing to Shakhtar Donetsk on matchday six. In addition, City have never failed to win a European tie after winning the away first leg. Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero are Manchester City’s top scorers throughout this Champions League campaign, having netted four goals each.

Manchester City Team News

Fernandinho and Raheem Sterling are both doubts, but Benjamin Mendy is out through a cruciate ligament injury.

Basel Preview

Basel’s recent form have been terrible as they have suffered four defeats in their last five competitive fixtures. They come into this clash on the back of a three-game losing streak, including a 2-0 away loss at Young Boys in the Swiss Cup a week ago. The good news is that the Swiss team have looked much better on the road over the past six months, having lost just once in their last eleven competitive fixtures. In addition, Basel have been in fine shape on the road in the Champions League as well, registering back-to-back 0-2 victories against CSKA Moscow and Benfica. However, prior to these results, Basel have failed to score in four consecutive Champions League fixtures. In addition, Basel suffered a thrashing defeat in their most recent trip to England, as they were beaten by Manchester United during the group stage. This is Basel’s 3rd appearance in the Champions League round of 16, but most likely, their adventure in the competition will end here. Dimitri Oberlin have been Basel’s most dangerous player in front of goal throughout this Champions League campaign, scoring four goals in seven appearances.

Basel Team News

Germano Vailati and Fabian Eder Alvarez Balanta are both doubts ahead of this tie.
