Malta vs England Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Malta host England at the Ta' Qali Stadium on 01/09/17 in a World Cup qualifier. Malta fell to defeat last time out, losing 2-0 at Slovenia in their previous qualifier, while England were 3-2 losers at France in their most recent international fixture in June. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

England are inevitably heavy favourites in a game they will be expected to win convincingly and with little issue. I’m expecting them to do so with no real issue and to take the three points this time out.

Dele Alli to score anytime - 5/6

Malta saw over 1.5 goals in 8 out of their last 10 games played

Malta Preview

Malta were perceived to be the group’s whipping boys once the draw for qualifiers were made and that has certainly proved to be the case thus far, with the team losing all six of their World Cup qualifiers so far. Slovenia were the most recent side to defeat them, with goals from Josip Ilicic and Milivoje Novakovic in either half sealing a comfortable 2-0 win for the home side. However, the team have won a game this year and against a surprise opponents in Ukraine, winning away from home with an impressive 1-0 victory. Alex Muscat teed up Zach Muscat to score the only goal of the game against Andriy Shevchenko’s side, handing their country their first victory since a 2-0 friendly win over Lithuania in June 2015. Malta are without a win in their last eight home games in both friendlies and competitive games, winning just two of their last eighteen matches on home soil. They did at least hold England to just a 2-0 defeat in their last meeting at Wembley which should give them some confidence heading into this one.

Malta Team News

Malta have two players who have experience playing in England, with non-league Ebbsfleet man Sam Magri and Michael Mifsud both familiar with English football.

England Preview

England last played in June also, losing 3-2 away to ten-man France in what turned out to be a disappointing result for Gareth Southgate and his men. However, their last competitive fixture was away at Scotland, where they were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw late on. Substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain fired England ahead with just twenty minutes to go, only for two Leigh Griffiths to strike two near-identical, superb free-kicks past Joe Hart. However, Harry Kane’s far-post volley late on saved England from defeat and leave them potentially two victories away from qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Southgate will have the choice of selecting two new faces this week, after handing debut call-ups to Harry Maguire and Nathaniel Chalobah, although Jordan Pickford has withdrawn from the squad. England have won just one of their last five matches in competitive and friendly outings, that being a 2-0 victory at home to Lithuania and it must be noted that they have faced Spain, Germany and France during that relatively unimpressive run of form. With qualification so close, Southgate will be looking to see a ruthless performance from his team and take three points in convincing fashion.

England Team News

England’s main dilemma it seems concerns who they play in goal, with Joe Hart coming under intense scrutiny in recent weeks. Jack Butland will be pushing to start after an impressive start to the season with Stoke.
