Malaga vs Espanyol Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Malaga remain in the bottom three after a 1-0 loss against relegation rivals Deportivo Alaves at the Mendizorrotza. The crucial goal of the game came in the 60th minute when Munir broke the deadlock with a fine finish. Espanyol became the first team to beat Atletico Madrid this season after a 1-0 win at the RCDE Stadium. Sergio Garcia’s winner just two minutes before time provided Espanyol with a shock win. Quique Flores, though, saw his team suffer a major setback in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter-finals after a 2-1 loss against Levante.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Malaga are without a victory over Espanyol in the last six attempts, as their last victory over the Catalan outfit came back in 2012. Even with Malaga playing at home, it is difficult to envisage a victory for Michel and his team. Espanyol’s away form is close to a disaster with no wins in eight, but the team has managed four draws in this run. 50% of the recent six meetings between Espanyol and Malaga have been a draw, and I would back the same in this game.

The last four La Liga matches from Malaga have been with under 2.5 goals. Three out of the last five league matches for Espanyol have also been with similar statistics. Over the last five meetings between Malaga and Espanyol, only one game has produced more than 2.5 goals. Hence, I see value behind going with under 2.5 goals in this game.

Malaga Preview

Malaga continue to experience a difficult run of form, which has kept the club in the bottom three. In fact, Michel has seen his team take up the 19th position for the last three match days. Malaga have been out of the bottom three in just two matchdays. As one of the lowest scoring teams with 13 goals in 17 matches, Malaga have been finding it difficult to find their way out of trouble. For a team in the bottom three, Malaga’s defence has been reasonably better – in comparison with teams around them – after conceding just 31 goals. Gonzalo Castro and Diego Rolan have scored close to 50% of the goals from Malaga this season. The duo have three goals each.

Malaga Team News

Adrian Gonzalez is the player unavailable due to suspension, while Diego Rolan (Achilles tendon), Miguel Torres(calf), and Juan Carlos (cruciate ligament) are unavailable due to injuries.

Espanyol Preview

Espanyol may have easily gone four league matches without a win if not for the late winner from Sergio Garcia in the match against Atletico Madrid. Unsurprisingly, the defence continues to be a strong point for Espanyol. Likewise, Espanyol continue to be let down by a poor attack, as the team has come up with only 14 goals in the 17 league matches. Gerard Moreno has played a huge role in the Espanyol team this season, as his seven goals mean that the 25-year-old has contributed 50% of the league goals for Espanyol. Leo Baptistao and Victor Sanchez Mata have been the other key players for Flores this season.

Espanyol Team News

Adrian Lopez (meniscus) and Jairo Morilla (discomfort) are unavailable for the game due to injuries.
