Mainz 05 vs Hertha Berlin Match Prediction

By William Hall

Slow starters Mainz welcome Hertha Berlin to the Opel Arena this weekend in the Bundesliga with both teams desperate to get as many points on the board early on. It hasn't been the start that Mainz would have been looking for after losing four of the opening five matches. It was a defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim during the week, losing 3-2 at home. Although Hertha Berlin have lost just one game this season, they would have been a bit disappointed to have not taken all three points in draws to Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim. A win at home to Bayer Leverkusen during the week would have lifted confidence massively at the club. Read on for a full match preview complete with all our best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

With the start Mainz have had to the season, it is hard to be able to tip them to win any game. They showed some good football in their last game, but lacked that edge and possibly a bit of fitness to be able to keep up with play in the final half an hour of the match. If they do the same again this weekend, they will find it tough to keep up with a Hertha Berlin side who are always a tough team to play whether you face them at home or away.

It has been Australian midfielder Mathew Leckie who has been pulling strings for Hertha Berlin this season. The right-footed midfielder has managed to bag four goals in just five games already this season, and for a midfielder, that is very decent. Clean sheets have been hard to come across for both teams this season, and with Mainz conceding seven in their last two games, it is hard to see them keeping one this weekend. It has been the same story for Hertha Berlin, keeping just one clean sheet in the first five games of the Bundesliga campaign. Both teams to score in this match looks a great bet.

Mainz 05 Preview

Mainz have had a shocking start to the season, losing four of their opening five matches and currently sitting 15th in the table. It 's hard to know what exactly is going wrong at the club with their one win coming against one of the toughest games of the season, Bayer Leverkusen. It was a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Hoffenheim during the week, and it couldn't have come much worse. Mainz were leading 2-0 after just 16 minutes which had many, including me thinking this was going to be a turning point in their season. However, a goal in the 23rd minute from Hoffenheim sparked a comeback, and when Wagner scored in stoppage time in the first half, it looked as if there was going to be only one winner. Mainz held out for long periods of the game, and to the heartbreak of the home team, Hoffenheim Uth scored a 92nd-minute winner. A reaction will be wanted this weekend, but whether they will get it is unknown.

Mainz 05 Team News

Mainz have a huge list of players out this weekend. Here is the full list; Alexander Hack (ankle injury), Emil Berggren (muscle injury), Gaetan Bussman (groin injury), Jannik Huth (knee injury), Kenan Kodro (ankle injury), Abdou Diallo (back injury), Marin Sverko (muscle injury), Niko Bungert (thigh injury), Phillip Klement (thigh injury) and Karim Onisiwo (rib injury).

Hertha Berlin Preview

Hertha Berlin have lost just one game this season, drawing two and winning the other two. The draws to Werder Bremen and Hoffenheim would have been a bit of a setback for the side, but a win in their last game at home to bayer Leverkusen would have defiantly lifted the spirits coming into this one. Hertha Berlin looked as if they had put the game out of sight very early on in the match with goals from Leckie and Kalou in the first 24 minutes. I stayed that way until the 84th minute where Brandt fired one back for the visiters. It was a very nervy and edgy last few minutes for Hertha, but they were able to hold on for all three points. One worryings thing for Hertha Berlin is that they have been able to keep just one clean sheet so far this season, they will need to improve this if they are going to challenge up near the top of the table.

Hertha Berlin Team News

Hertha Berlin have six players who are doughts or injured for this one; Jonathan Klinsmann (ankle injury), Julian Schieber (knee injury), Valentino Lazaro (ankle injury), Julius Kade (muscle injury), Davie Selke (toe injury) and Dennis Smarsch (ACL).
