Lyon vs Strasbourg Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

The newcomers Strasbourg will be looking to begin their Ligue 1 adventure in a positive manner when they travel to the Parc Olympique Lyonnais to take on Lyon on Saturday evening. Lyon only managed a 1-1 home draw against Montpellier in a friendly fixture two days ago thanks to a second-half goal from Nabil Fekir, although they played with ten men from the 25th minute when Jeremy Morel saw red. Meanwhile, Strasbourg picked a comfortable 4-1 home win over UNFP in a friendly game last Sunday thanks to a brace from Stephane Bahoken and two other goals from Ihsan Sacko and Kevin Lucien Zohi. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Theoretically, Lyon should have no problems in picking up all three points here, but they will definitely miss Lacazette in the final third and Tolisso in midfield. Meanwhile, Strasbourg looked pretty good in the pre-season, and I think they are more than capable of grabbing a point here, particularly because it is the first round of the new season and all the squads need a bit of time to settle in.

Lyon Preview

Lyon finished in 4th spot in the Ligue 1 table last term, but I’m expecting them to struggle a little bit this season. Les Gones have lost two of their last season’s key players throughout this summer transfer window, as Alexandre Lacazette joined Arsenal for €53 million while Corentin Tolisso moved to Bayern Munich for €41.5 million. Furthermore, Emanuel Mammana, Maxime Gonalons, Maciej Rybus and Mathieu Valbuena have also left the club this summer for a total fee of €24.2. On the other hand, they brought Bertrand Traore from Chelsea for €10m, Mariano Diaz from Real Madrid for €8m, Marcelo from Besiktas for €7m, Ferland Mendy from Le Havre for €5m, Marcal from Benfica and Kenny Tete from Ajax for a total fee of €8.5m. Lyon started their pre-season campaign brightly with three consecutive wins over Bourg Peronnas, Celtic and Ajax, conceding just once in the process. However, they were beaten by Inter 1-0 in the International Champions Cup and followed this up with only a 1-1 home draw against Montpellier. On home soil, Lyon have only lost three of their last 15 home games across all competitions and are currently on a five-game unbeaten streak. In addition, Lyon are undefeated in their eight home meetings with Strasbourg in Ligue 1, winning seven in the process.

Lyon Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Lyon ahead of this game.

Strasbourg Preview

Meanwhile, Strasbourg are finally back in Ligue 1 after a nine-year absence as they have won the Ligue 2 division title last season, with just one point above the fellow newcomers Amiens. Strasbourg looked very strong during the pre-season, winning three and drawing three of their six friendlies. They have scored goals for fun during this run, netting at least three goals in three of their last five fixtures. Overall, Strasbourg are currently on a 16-game unbeaten streak across all competitions, winning ten in the process. However, Strasbourg have been struggling for form on the road over the past seven months, winning just three of their last 13 games across all competitions. In comparison with the other two newly-promoted teams in the shape of Amiens and Troyes, Strasbourg managed to spend some money during the transfer window, as they brought Idriss Saadi from Cardiff and Jonas Martin from Real Betis for a total fee of €3m. Furthermore, Benjamin Corgnet and Kenny Lala have both joined the squad on free transfers from Saint-Etienne and Lens respectively. Head-to-head, Strasbourg have been completely dominated by Lyon over the past years as their last victory over Les Gones came in a Coupe de France game back in 2001.

Strasbourg have no fresh injury concerns ahead of this trip.
