Lyon vs Monaco Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Monaco will be aiming to close the gap at the top of the Ligue 1 table when they travel to the Groupama Stadium to take on Lyon on Friday night. Lyon threw away a two-goal lead to only register a 3-3 away draw at Angers prior to the International break. Mariano Diaz, Mouctar Diakhaby and Memphis Depay all got on the scoresheet in the first half, but Lyon were unable to maintain their lead after Marcelo saw red in the 50th minute. Monaco have also recorded just a 1-1 home draw against Montpellier last time out despite they had a one-goal lead until the stoppage time thanks to a first-half goal from Radamel Falcao. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news, match stats and odds all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

The most recent four meetings between these two teams have seen goals at both ends of the field and this tie shouldn’t be different as both teams have scored plenty of goals in this early part of the campaign. Lyon have scored at least two goals in four of their last five home competitive fixtures, while Monaco have found the back of the net at least once in four of their last five away games across all competitions. I think that a draw is the most likely outcome for this clash as Lyon have already been involved in a couple of draws lately, while three of the last six meetings between these two teams have ended in draws.

Lyon Preview

Lyon have had a solid start to this competitive season, but their recent run of form has been far from good. They are currently on a five-game winless streak across all competitions, including two consecutive 1-1 draws in their Europa League group stage campaign. Regarding their recent Ligue 1 campaign, Lyon are winless in three games at the moment since a 2-1 home win over Guingamp a month ago. This leaves them in 8th position in the standings with 13 points under their belts after eight rounds, just two points behind the top five. Despite their inconsistency throughout this campaign, Les Gones still looked dangerous in front of goal as they hold one of the best-attacking records in the division with 17 goals scored in eight games. Mariano Diaz has impressed since his arrival from Real Madrid this summer, as he is currently leading the club’s goalscoring charts with six goals under his belt. One of the last season’s key players, Nabil Fekir, has also enjoyed a strong start to the season, helping the team with five goals and two assists in his eight league appearances. Les Gones can count on their home form ahead of this clash as they have won five and draw five of their last ten home fixtures across all competitions.

Lyon Team News

Marcelo is the only absentee for Lyon ahead of this clash, as he is missing through suspension after being sent off last time out against Angers.

Monaco Preview

Despite losing several key players this summer, Monaco have still been one of the best Ligue 1 teams in this early part of the season. They have only lost once in eight league games so far this season, and come into this tie on the back of a three-game unbeaten run. After back-to-back comfortable wins over Strasbourg and Lille, Monaco only managed a 1-1 draw against Montpellier last time out in Ligue 1, despite the fact they had the lead until the 92nd minute. During their recent run of form, Monaco suffered a disappointing 0-3 home loss at the hands of FC Porto in the Champions League, which leaves them with just one point to their name after two group fixtures. They had an amazing run in the Champions League last season when they reached the Semi-finals of the competition, but they now find themselves at the bottom of the group G table, two points behind the second-placed Porto. Regarding their Ligue 1 campaign, the Monegasque sit second in the standings with 19 points after eight games, three points adrift of the current leaders Paris Saint Germain. Monaco’s away form over the past five months has been a complete mixed bag with three defeats, five wins and two draws in their last ten away games across all competitions. The good news is that Monaco have won two of their last three visits to the Groupama Stadium.

Monaco Team News

Stevan Jovetic and Adama Diakhaby are both doubts, while Pierre-Daniel Nguinda and Loic Badiashile are both out through injury.
