Liverpool vs Wolverhampton Wanderers Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool host Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on 28/01/17 as the home side look to bounce back from what has been a hugely disappointing January. Jurgen Klopp’s side crashed out of the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, losing 1-0 at home to Southampton, going out 2-0 on aggregate. Wolves meanwhile didn’t fare much better in their most recent outing, losing 3-1 away to Norwich City at Carrow Road. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Liverpool Preview

The New Year has brought a new, downward trajectory for Liverpool, who have managed just one win in seven games since the start of 2017. For the second tie running, they struggled to break down a stubborn, well-organised Southampton side who refused to budge. Daniel Sturridge had the Reds’ best opportunities but he was wasteful in front of goal, missing two excellent chances which you would ordinarily expect to see him take. With Liverpool piling players forward, Southampton broke through youngster Josh Sims who showed excellent composure to pick out Shane Long who made no mistake with the chance. Klopp’s players have showed real signs of fatigue in recent weeks, suffering the effects of such a draining brand of football combined with a congested fixture list. The game with Southampton was their ninth in twenty-seven days and it seems clear that with an average of a game every three days this squad is not deep enough to contend with such a heavy workload. With three draws and three defeats in their last seven outings, this is undoubtedly the most difficult spell of Klopp’s reign so far and is borderline being considered something deeper than a mere blip. How Klopp lines his side up will be interesting to see, with Chelsea coming up on Tuesday. He either has the choice of rotating the squad or can attempt to play some of his first-team players into form by giving them a run out this weekend.

Wolves Preview

Wolves’ slight resurgence was brought to a halt on Saturday as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away to Norwich City. Steven Naismith ensured the Canaries went into ahead at the break when he opened the scoring thirteen minutes in, although Helder Costa’s penalty after the interval drew Paul Lambert’s men level. Then, Carl Ikeme was dismissed after denying a clear goalscoring opportunity, from which Robbie Brady converted from the penalty spot. Jonny Howson then made it 3-1 in stoppage time as Lambert was handed an unhappy return to Carrow Road. Currently 18th in the Championship table, seven points above the relegation zone, this is not the kind of return the club’s owners expected from the investment made in the summer. However, in Lambert they have a manager used to this division and who also has experience of winning promotion to the Premier League. Lambert also seemed to have Liverpool’s number during his time at Aston Villa, causing an upset against Brendan Rodgers’ side on more than one occasion. Lambert visited Anfield three times as Villa boss, winning twice and drawing once in that time as they became the Reds’ bogey side for a significant spell, even beating them in the 2015 FA Cup semi-final just two months after Lambert was dismissed at Villa Park.

Liverpool Team News

Sadio Mane remains unavailable to Liverpool due to his Africa Cup of Nations commitments. Danny Ings (knee) is ruled out for the season, while Nathaniel Clyne (rib) and Marko Grujic (foot) are also missing. Loris Karius is expected to continue in goal having done so in cup competitions in recent weeks.

Wolves Team News

With Carl Ikeme suspended and Andy Lonergan a doubt with a knee problem, 20-year-old Harry Burgoyne could start in goal for just his third appearance. Silvio (broken foot), Niall Ennis (broken leg), Michal Zyro and Jordan Graham (both cruciate ligament) are all long-term doubts.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Liverpool have had a dismal start to 2017 and are now in real jeopardy of their season sliding through their fingers at the blink of an eye. Wolves will more than fancy their chances at Anfield with the opposition in such form, but I’m expecting Klopp to evoke a reaction from his players ahead of a huge game on Tuesday night with Chelsea.
