Liverpool vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool host Southampton at Anfield on 25/01/17 in the second leg of their EFL Cup semi-final, with the away side carrying a 1-0 advantage. Liverpool’s season took a significant blow at the weekend as they lost 3-2 at home to Swansea City. Southampton meanwhile enjoyed a successful day’s work as they cruised to a 3-0 win over Leicester City at St. Mary’s. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Liverpool have struggled poorly as of late, and although Southampton, on the whole, haven’t been great, Sunday’s victory should give them great confidence heading into this one. Anfield is historically a fortress on such occasions where Liverpool need to win, and I’m expecting the crowd to play a huge part in this game. Looking at the odds, I see great value in Liverpool to qualify.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool’s title hopes took a huge dent on Saturday lunchtime, as they were stunned by relegation-threatened Swansea, who came away from Anfield with three points after a 3-2 win. Fernando Llorente put the Swans into a two-goal lead, first poking in from close range before he headed in Tom Carroll’s tremendous cross, giving it the finish it deserved by powering past Simon Mignolet. However, Liverpool’s centre forward responded with a brace of his own, as Roberto Firmino scored twice, first with a header of his own before an excellent half-volley restored parity. With the momentum seemingly in favour of the home side, Gylfi Sigurdsson restored Swansea’s lead to give his team the three points, taking them out of the bottom three in doing so. Liverpool are still without a league win in 2016, coming out on top just once in their six matches since the turn of the year. Sadio Mane’s absence has been a significant factor in why they have been so poor since the turn of the year, although it really speaks more of the incompetence of those at the very top who did not bring in any replacements. In their two meetings with Southampton so far this season, Liverpool have failed to score on both occasions and require at least two here if they are to seal a return to Wembley where they lost in the final of this very competition. Southampton Preview

Southampton ended a run of four successive Premier League defeats on Sunday as they comprehensively turned Leicester City over 3-0 at home. James Ward-Prowse put the hosts ahead after twenty-six minutes, sweeping the ball into the far post from Cedric’s lay-off. Jay Rodriguez then lashed in as Leicester failed to clear a Ward-Prowse delivery into the box, with Dusan Tadic sealing the win in the closing minutes from the penalty spot. The result came as a real relief to the Saints, who could’ve ended the weekend 14th in the table, but instead are just a point off the top ten in 11th. It’s really all or nothing with the cup competitions at St. Mary’s this term, with it looking unlikely that they will now challenge for European honours through their league position. Given that they are more well-known for their defensive ability over their goalscoring exploits, they will be delighted to be in the position of being a goal in front, rather than needing to chase the game. That said, they will need to play with caution but without doing so to the negative witnessed when they faced Hapoel Be’er Sheva at St. Mary’s, where they looked to play for a 0-0 draw but tied 1-1 and ultimately exited the Europa League. Virgil Van Dijk took a knock in the victory over Leicester and Southampton will be desperate for their talisman to be available for what is the biggest game of their season so far.
