Liverpool vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool host Southampton at Anfield on 18/11/17 as the home side look to pick up where they left off before the international break. Liverpool were emphatic 4-1 winners at West Ham last time out, while Southampton lost 1-0 at home to Burnley. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Liverpool have looked more like their former selves in recent games, arguably seeing the international break come at a convenient time. Southampton meanwhile are in a slump and I’m not expecting them to come out of that negative run here.

Liverpool Preview

On their day, there is arguably no better counter-attacking team in the Premier League than Liverpool, a tactic which was put to good effect during their 4-1 victory over West Ham United. Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were rampant in Liverpool’s opener, as the former teed up the latter after running the length of the pitch together, before Joel Matip made it 2-0 three minutes later. Manuel Lanzini pulled one back in the second half for the Hammers, but they had almost no time to celebrate as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain equalised a minute later. Salah then produced a lethal finish with another Mane assist as the Reds made it three wins on the bounce in all competitions and kept the gap between themselves and the top four at three points. With just one loss in their last nine, Liverpool appear to be recovering from what was a difficult start to the season and are now looking more like the side Jurgen Klopp had put together at the start of last term. Their form at Anfield has never been in question, with the team remaining unbeaten in their eight home games in all competitions thus far. A title challenge may well now be out of the equation, but given the attacking talent at the disposal of Klopp they will certainly be in the hunt for a place in the top four once again.

Liverpool Team News

Adam Lallana (thigh) is set to make his first appearance in the Liverpool squad this weekend following injury. Jordan Henderson (thigh) and Sadio Mane (hamstring) will be assessed, while Nathaniel Clyne (back) faces a further three months on the sidelines following surgery.

Southampton Preview

Southampton desperately need a lift and few things would boost the club’s supporters more than an away win at Liverpool after seeing their team lose 1-0 at home to Burnley before the international break. Once more, goals were hard to come by for Saints, who were left frustrated by a number of excellent saves from stand-in Burnley keeper Nick Pope, who has impressed since his introduction to the side. In the end it was Burnley manager Sean Dyche that was rewarded for his positivity after bringing on forwards Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes and it was the latter who headed in the winner ten minutes from time against his boyhood club. As a result, Southampton have now managed just one win in their last six Premier League games, winning just three games from their first 11 overall. That run has seen them slump to 13th in the table, with last season’s manager Claude Puel now sitting above them with his Leicester side in 12th. They have been more impressive in their away outings so far, losing just once in their four games on the road to date, though they have also taken just one victory from that time. Should there not be a real improvement in the weeks that follow, Mauricio Pellegrino could find himself under real pressure at St. Mary’s.

Southampton Team News

Mario Lemina (ankle) is Southampton’s only injury absentee for this one.
