Liverpool vs Southampton Match Prediction

By Bharath Ramm R

Liverpool were able to enjoy a comprehensive 2-1 win over Tottenham at Wembley. Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Roberto Firmino were able to put the Reds 2-0 up after 54 minutes, but a late goal from Erik Lamela prevented a clean sheet for the Reds. Jurgen Klopp’s team went on to beat PSG 3-2 in the first group game of Champions League. Southampton are now unbeaten in three after a 2-2 draw with Brighton. Pierre Hojbjerg and Danny Ings scored either side of the break to hand a comfortable advantage for Southampton, but Brighton produced a remarkable comeback with goals from Shane Duffy and Glen Murray.

Here we have our SBAT match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Liverpool are not expected to change their tactics even though PSG and Southampton are worlds apart in terms of quality levels. The Reds will be coming in with a great deal of expectation to register a sixth consecutive win. Even though the head-to-head record is not immensely in favour of Liverpool, the Reds are more than capable of dismantling the opposition with ease. Southampton lack strength going forward and Danny Ings is ineligible to play against his parent club in the match. I would back over 3.5 goals in the game along with a Liverpool win.

Mark Hughes claims that Southampton will be able to cope without the presence of Ings, but the striker has contributed 50% of the league goals scored by the club this season. Even though Liverpool have conceded in the last three games without exception, they have managed three straight clean sheets against the Saints. I would back a clean sheet for Liverpool.

Liverpool Preview

Jurgen Klopp has made a huge impact at Liverpool so far this season. Apart from spending large sums of money in order to strengthen the backline, the manager has also worked on several aspects of the team in order to make them tactically astute. Despite conceding a goal in each of the last three games, Liverpool’s tactical discipline and awareness have been impressive in this early part of the campaign. The game against Southampton probably represents the easiest of Liverpool’s fixtures before the next international break and this may be one of the few problematic areas for the club, as it can drain energy from players.

Liverpool Team News

Adam Lallana (groin) and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (cruciate ligament) are unavailable for the Reds.

Southampton Preview

The mediocre start of the campaign is fast being forgotten by Southampton, who are on a three-game unbeaten streak. The next few weeks can be crucial for the club with the team facing the likes of Newcastle and Wolves. Mark Hughes’ men have profited from the form of Danny Ings and it will be vital for the club to build on this platform. Southampton are yet to receive much of an impact from Charlie Austin and it would bode well for the Saints if he manages to strike a good partnership with Ings.

Southampton Team News

Manolo Gabbiadini (hamstring) and Jan Bednarek (ankle) are on the sidelines for Mark Hughes’ men.
