Liverpool vs Maribor Match Prediction

As the odds suggest, anything other than an extremely comfortable Liverpool victory would come as a huge shock on Wednesday evening and I’m expecting there to be no such upset at Anfield.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool picked up a much-needed win at home to Huddersfield Town at the weekend, as a strong second-half performance saw Jurgen Klopp’s men secure a 3-0 victory. Mohamed Salah missed a penalty late in the first half but his blushes were spared just five minutes into the second as Daniel Sturridge calmly looped the ball past Jonas Lossl. Roberto Firmino and Gini Wijnaldum added their names to the scoresheet to ensure the Reds bounced back from last weekend’s hugely disappointing 4-1 defeat at Tottenham. Despite what has been an underwhelming start to this season, Liverpool remain unbeaten at home this season, winning four and drawing three of their seven games at Anfield in all competitions. Surprisingly, they also have the second-best defensive home record of any team in the Premier League at present, with only Manchester United boasting a better record at this moment in time. They now have the opportunity to win their first home Champions League group game since September 2014 this Wednesday evening, having also failed to win more than once at home in either of their previous two visits to this stage of the competition.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne (back), Adam Lallana (thigh) and Sadio Mane (hamstring) are all absent once again for Liverpool. Dejan Lovren and Philippe Coutinho will all be assessed after missing out at the weekend.

Maribor Preview

Maribor moved level on points with Slovenian league leaders Olimpija with a victory away to mid table side Domzale on Saturday evening. The game was decided by just the one foal, as forward Jasmin Mesanovic netted the game’s only goal with an effort just before the hour mark as their title hopes were given yet another boost at the weekend. It’s very much a two-horse race for their league title at this moment in time, with a double-header between the top two sides approaching in just over a fortnight in league and cup action. Those will undoubtedly be the priorities for this Maribor side moving forward now, after their chances of qualifying became pretty improbably following a humiliating 7-0 loss to Liverpool in their last game, thus giving them a goal difference of -10. Though it is not mathematically impossible for them to still qualify, you would expect them to be at least five points adrift of a spot in the top two if results go the way most anticipate. Maribor’s previous visit to England resulted in a 6-0 loss at the hands of Chelsea and they will be looking to avoid a repeat result this time around.

Maribor Team News

Denis Sme (achilles) and Luka Zahovic (knee) are both set to miss out for the visitors.
