Liverpool vs Manchester United Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool welcome Manchester United to Anfield on 14/10/17 as two of England’s oldest foes rekindle their rivalry this weekend. Liverpool’s patchy form continued last time out as they were held to a 1-1 draw away to Newcastle United, while Manchester United were 4-0 winners at home to a sorry Crystal Palace outfit. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Given the current form of both sides, United in particular look real value here, although Jose Mourinho will so often set up in these games not to lose over committing more players forward to win. As such, I’m expecting this one to end in a draw, with United also missing key players.

Liverpool Preview

Two very easily diagnosable issues are costing Liverpool at this moment in time - a failure to keep the ball out of their own and put the ball in their opponent’s net - which came back to haunt them once again at Newcastle United last time out. A typical classy effort from Philippe Coutinho handed Jurgen Klopp a much-needed boost, but their achilles heel came back to haunt them minutes later. With the gap between Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren as wide as land, Joselu bursted through and finished with fortune past Simon Mignolet to level the scoreline. From there, Liverpool squandered a host of excellent chances as they once again peppered the opposition goal without getting the results that the quantity of their efforts should really have been rewarded with. That result now means it’s just one win in seven games in all competitions for Liverpool, with the team conceding fourteen goals during that time and have drawn three of their last five games 1-1. Despite this, Liverpool have taken seven points from a possible nine from their three home Premier League games this term, losing just twice in their previous twenty-two at Anfield stretching back to the start of last season.

Liverpool Team News

Sadio Mane (hamstring) is facing up to six weeks on the sidelines through injury. Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Adam Lallana (thigh) remain absent for Liverpool. Roberto Firmino is likely to return to the starting XI in place of Daniel Sturridge.

Manchester United Preview

Free-scoring Manchester United continued their excellent run of form before the international break, putting the hapless Crystal Palace to the sword with an easy 4-0 victory at Old Trafford. It took Juan Mata just three minutes to score the opener after good work from Marcus Rashford, before Ashley Young’s excellent cross was put past Wayne Hennessey by Marouane Fellaini. Fellaini netted again shortly after half-time before the inevitable occurred, with Romelu Lukaku adding his name to the scoresheet once more four minutes from time. United have now scored four goals in four of their last five matches in all competition, and have already scored that number of goals on six occasions this season. They have an identical return of points away from home as Liverpool have at Anfield so far this term, winning two and drawing one of their three outings. Last season Jose Mourinho set his team up with an extremely pragmatic approach when they faced Liverpool away from home, but such a tactic may not be so well received by United fans this time round, particularly with the start they have made to this season.

Manchester United Team News

Marcos Rojo (cruciate ligament), Paul Pogba (hamstring), Marouane Fellaini and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (both knee) are all ruled out. Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Romelu Lukaku will all be assessed.
