Both of these sides will look to play an open game, with goals almost guaranteed when either one of them plays. I’m expecting both sides to cancel each other out - score draw.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool’s third round FA Cup Merseyside Derby arguably couldn’t have gone any better for Jurgen Klopp’s men, who beat Everton 2-1 thanks to their £75m debutant. The red side of the city were forced to wait until the 35th minute for the opening goal, as James Milner converted from the penalty spot to reward them for their dominance. It looked as if Gylfi Sigurdsson’s goal on the counter-attack would see Everton steal a second successive 1-1 draw at Anfield under Sam Allardyce, but Virgil van Dijk established himself as an instant Liverpool hero after heading in the winner five minutes from time in front of the Kop. Klopp will be eager to secure his first piece of silverware as Liverpool manager this season, after losing in both the League Cup and Europa League finals in 2016, as well as managing to secure a place in the top four. That, combined with a run in Europe, remains the goal for the Reds this term, who will now look to deal with the loss of Philippe Coutinho, following his £146m move to Barcelona. Winning their last four in a row, Klopp’s side will be full of confidence coming into this game, particularly with the fact they are unbeaten at Anfield against City since 2003, winning 1-0 in this fixture last year.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Jordan Henderson (hamstring) are both set to miss out for Liverpool. Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) and Alberto Moreno (ankle) are unlikely to be risked.

Manchester City Preview

Like Liverpool in their last cup tie, Manchester City left it late to beat Bristol City in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final. Bobby Reid stunned Pep Guardiola’s side just before half-time, as the Championship outfit went in ahead thanks to their top scorer’s effort from the penalty spot. However, it took all but ten minutes for City to draw themselves level, doing so through Kevin de Bruyne, before Sergio Aguero dealt a dagger to Lee Johnson’s men with the winner two minutes from time. Of all of the challenges City have faced in the Premier League this season, this could be the toughest to stand in their way so far, with Liverpool particularly formidable at Anfield. That said, when you take 31 points from a possible 33 away from home this season, no side nor ground should particularly daunt the Premier League leaders. Still 15 points clear at the top of the table, they are deserved favourites to go on and lift the Premier League title this term, as well as having their eyes on cup success. Ending this hoodoo at Anfield will be a real target of Guardiola’s, and they may well have the psychological edge over their opponents here, having secured an emphatic 5-1 win at the Etihad in the reverse fixture.

Manchester City Team News

Vincent Kompany (calf), Benjamin Mendy (cruciate ligament), Phil Foden (ankle) and Gabriel Jesus (knee) are all ruled out here.
