Liverpool vs Hoffenheim Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Hoffenheim will be looking to overturn a one-goal deficit when they travel to the Anfield Stadium to take on Liverpool for the second leg of their Champions League play-off tie. Liverpool managed to pick up a 1-2 victory on the road at Hoffenheim last week, although the hosts missed a penalty-kick early in the game, while Liverpool’s second goal was actually an own-goal from Havard Nordtveit. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Although Hoffenheim have struggled to find the back of the net recently, they still should be able to score at Anfield as Liverpool have struggled to keep the ball out of their own net in this early start of the new competitive season. I’m expecting another high-scoring affair with goals at both ends of the field.

Liverpool Preview

Liverpool kicked off their Premier League campaign with a disappointing 3-3 away draw at Watford, but they did well to beat Hoffenheim 1-2 in the first leg of their Champions League play-off tie last week. Furthermore, they followed this up with a narrow 1-0 home win over Crystal Palace in the Premier League at the weekend thanks to a late goal from Sadio Mane. Overall, Liverpool have only lost once in their last 16 games across all competitions and are currently on a four-game unbeaten streak. They have qualified for this stage of the competition by coming fourth in the Premier League table last season. However, their Champions League recent record has been poor as prior to their 1-2 win over Hoffenheim, they were on a five-game winless streak. Furthermore, the Reds have only won once in their last five Champions League home games. Since 2009/10, when Liverpool failed to get out of their Champions League group, this is only their second appearance in the competition following another group-stage participation in 2014/15. Their most recent participation in a European competition was reaching the Europa League final back in the 2015/16 season.

Liverpool Team News

Nathaniel Clyne, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Bogdan are all doubts, but Adama Lallana is out through a thigh injury. The good news is that Mamadou Sakho is back in training.

Hoffenheim Preview

Hoffenheim, on the other hand, were unlucky to not get at least one point from their clash with Liverpool last week, but they did well to beat Werder Bremen 1-0 at home at the weekend in the first round of the new Bundesliga campaign. After missing a penalty against Liverpool last week, Andrej Kramaric washed his sins at the weekend by scoring the winner against Werder Bremen. Their recent form has seen them win four of their last five games across all competitions. Scoring goals has been Hoffe’ main issue over the past two weeks as they scored just three goals in their most recent three competitive fixtures. They finished in 4th in the Bundesliga table last season with 62 points to their name, just two points behind the third-placed Borussia Dortmund. This is Hoffe’s first European tie, but might be coming to an end a bit sooner than expected. Away from home, Hoffenheim have endured a mixed run of form over the past five months, registering three defeats, four wins and three draws in their last ten away games across all competitions. In addition, they have conceded at least one goal in six of their last ten games on the road.

Hoffenheim Team News

Florian Grillitsch is the only doubtful player for Hoffenheim ahead of this trip.
