Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool take on Crystal Palace at Anfield on 19/08/17 in a meeting of two sides who were unable to pick up a win on the opening day of the Premier League season. Liverpool drew 3-3 at Watford to kick off their campaign, while Crystal Palace were stunned by Huddersfield, who ran out 3-0 victors at Selhurst Park. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Despite their defensive issues at Vicarage Road, Liverpool’s result away to Hoffenheim in midweek should give them confidence ahead of this fixture. Palace, on the other hand, look as if they will take some time to adjust to Frank de Boer’s style of play and I’m tipping Liverpool to win this game comfortably.

Liverpool Preview

A new season but Liverpool show no sign of improving defensively, conceding two sloppy goals from Stefano Okaka and Abdoulaye Doucoure either side of a well-worked effort from Sadio Mane. The Reds’ attacking prowess is well-known, and when Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah struck in the second half it was expected that they would go on to win the game, but Watford bounced back. Miguel Britos took advantage of more hesitant Liverpool defending in stoppage time to seal a 3-3 draw for the hosts, as Jurgen Klopp was left to rue more defensive problems. However, their 2-1 success away to Hoffenheim will give them real confidence, beating a side who, prior to the game, hadn’t lost at home in 15 months. That, too, was done without the help of Philippe Coutinho, who will miss out once again this weekend due to ongoing speculation that he will join Barcelona this summer. Regardless of whether or not Coutinho stays or goes, it is imperative that the Reds bring in further recruitments to bolster the squad, most importantly with Virgil van Dijk in defence.

Liverpool Team News

Adam Lallana (thigh) and Philippe Coutinho will both miss out for Liverpool this weekend. Nathaniel Clyne (back) is doubtful, but Daniel Sturridge (hamstring) could return to the squad after returning to training.

Crystal Palace Preview

Nobody expected the transition of philosophy from Sam Allardyce to Frank de Boer to be a smooth one, but a 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Huddersfield certainly wasn’t anticipated either. An unfortunate Joel Ward own goal sent the Terriers on their way, before Steve Mounie headed in unchallenged from close range. Mounie added his second twelve minutes from time with a powerful finish, leaving de Boer with plenty to work on heading into matchday two of the Premier League season. The fluid 3-4-2-1 system adopted for the opening weekend is a world away from the tight, rigid defensive structure Allardyce implemented at the end of last season, although it’s not to say they don’t have the players to play in such way. Wilfried Zaha should thrive in a fluid attacking system, while striker Christian Benteke will have chances presented his way. Palace have won on their last three trips to Anfield, as they now look to make it four wins on the bounce on Merseyside.

Crystal Palace Team News

Wilfried Zaha is set to miss the trip to Anfield with a leg injury sustained on the opening day of the season. Connor Wickham (knee) and Bakary Sako (knock) are both unlikely to feature, but Pape Souare (leg) is back in training.
