Liverpool vs Burnley Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool face Burnley at Anfield on 16/09/17 following mixed results for the respective teams last time out. Liverpool drew 2-2 at home to Sevilla in the Champions League in midweek, while Burnley came out 1-0 winners at home to Crystal Palace last Sunday in their most recent outing. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Burnley have performed well away from home so far this season, but it’s an extremely tough ask for them to continue in the same fashion. I’m going for a Liverpool win.

Liverpool Preview

Winning your home games is vital to securing qualification from the Champions League group stages which will have made Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Sevilla all the more infuriating. Wissam Ben Yedder opened the scoring inside five minutes as Dejan Lovren failed to clear his lines at the near post. However, Liverpool responded well, going in at half-time 2-1 up after Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah netted and they missed a glorious chance to score a third before the break. Firmino struck the post from the penalty spot and it turned out to hurt his team dearly, as Joaquin Correa netted calmly following an excellent first-touch and finish. It’s been a difficult few days for Jurgen Klopp and his team, after being thrashed away at Manchester City last weekend and now will be expecting his side to return to winning ways in style. They will of course be without Sadio Mane in their attempts to do so, after the winger was sent off for clashing with City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes, opening the door for the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to feature. The Reds have lost just one of their last eleven Premier League games at home and have been particularly strong at Anfield under Klopp.

Liverpool Team News

Sadio Mane is suspended and misses out for Liverpool here, as do Nathaniel Clyne (back) and Adam Lallana (thigh) through injury.

Burnley Preview

Frank de Boer’s short spell as Crystal Palace boss came to an end last weekend as Burnley picked up their second win of the season after a 1-0 success at Turf Moor. A defensive error handed the hosts the only goal of the game, as Chung-Yong Lee’s back pass was severely underhit, allowing Chris Wood a free burst towards goal and the New Zealand international finished well past Wayne Hennessey. From there on in, it was Palace who had the best of the goalscoring opportunities, with Scott Dann missing their best chance with a far-post header which he put wide. The result means Burnley have now lost just one of their first five games in all competitions and are unbeaten in three coming into their visit of Anfield, with incidentally their only loss of the season coming at home. Last term they were forced to wait until their penultimate away match to win their first away game of the season but did so in their first of this and are now just three points away from equalling their entire points tally earned on the road from last campaign. New signing Wood will be full of confidence here after scoring twice in his opening two Premier League games.

Burnley Team News

Tom Heaton (dislocated shoulder) is set to miss out here, with Tom Pope set to start in goal, but Jeff Hendrick (thigh) could feature. Dean Marney (cruciate ligament) and Nahki Wells are both ruled out through injury.
