Liverpool vs Arsenal Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Liverpool host Arsenal at Anfield on 27/08/17 in an early-season meeting between two sides who hold aspirations of competing for the Premier League title. Liverpool beat Hoffenheim 4-2 in midweek to progress to the Champions League group stages, whereas Arsenal fell to their first defeat of the season with a 1-0 loss away to Stoke. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Liverpool were excellent in midweek during their Champions League clash, looking a serious threat with the pace and creativity in the side. I’m expecting this to be a home win, but for Arsenal’s attack to cause Liverpool’s defence problems of their own in doing so.

Liverpool Preview

If anybody doubted Liverpool’s ability to blow teams away without the aid of Philippe Coutinho, that judgement may need to be reconsidered after the opening twenty minutes of their Champions League tie against Hoffenheim. Emre Can scored twice either side of a Mo Salah to give the hosts an early 3-0 lead and virtually kill the tie there and then, despite substitute Marc Uth responding in the 28th minute. Excellent work from Jordan Henderson allowed Roberto Firmino to get his name on the scoresheet, but their achilles heel was demonstrated once again as Sandro Wagner headed in a second for the visitors. For as frightening and devastating as this team can be going forward, they are almost as equally nervy in defence and somehow getting the Virgil van Dijk deal across the line before the closing of the window must be a serious priority. After beating Crystal Palace 1-0 last weekend thanks to Sadio Mane’s second-half goal, victory here would see the Reds sit on seven points from their opening three games; a decent return heading into the international break. Mane in particular has looked unplayable in the early weeks of this season and will be the key threat to breaking down the Arsenal defence this weekend.

Liverpool Team News

Philippe Coutinho is set to miss out once again as Barcelona continue to chase his signature. Adam Lallana (thigh) and Nathaniel Clyne (back) are both missing for the hosts through injury.

Arsenal Preview

Certain teams just don’t enjoy playing at certain grounds, and the Bet365 Stadium is just that for Arsenal, who once again lost away to Stoke City, with the Potters running out 1-0 winners last weekend. Arsene Wenger made two changes from their opening day victory against Leicester but it failed to have the desired effect, as the team looked no stronger defensively in their 3-4-2-1 formation. Stoke’s latest signing Jese Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game, converting past Petr Cech after being released smartly by Saido Berahino. Alexandre Lacazette thought he’d equalised for the Gunners, only for the linesman to flag him offside in what was an incrementally tight call to make. Arsenal though, aren’t the only title contenders to lose in the opening two weekends, with Wenger’s side currently sat level on points with Tottenham and Chelsea. They have been handed a real boost coming into this contest, with Wenger confirming that Alexis Sanchez will be in the matchday squad for the weekend, having missed the opening two games due to the uncertainty surrounding his future. The prospect of Sanchez, Lacazette and Mesut Ozil in attack is a mouth-watering prospect for Arsenal fans, although the Chilean is likely to start on the bench.

Arsenal Team News

Santi Cazorla (achilles) is ruled out once again, but they will have Laurent Koscielny available following suspension. Alexis Sanchez will make his first appearance of the season for Arsenal this weekend.
