Linfield vs Celtic Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

A problematic fixture between the champions of Northern Ireland and Scotland will take place at the Windsor Park in Belfast on Friday afternoon, as Linfield and Celtic will be facing each other for the first leg of their Champions League second qualifying round. Linfield only managed a narrow 1-0 aggregate win over La Fiorita in the previous qualifying round thanks to a late goal from Sukka. Celtic haven’t played an official game over the past two months, but come into this tie on the back of a ridiculous 0-9 win over Shamrock Rovers in a friendly fixture a week ago. The game kicks off on Friday in order to avoid a clash with the annual Orange Order marches in Belfast and because Linfield are coached by Rangers’ former striker David Healy. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Despite the tensions surrounding this game, Celtic should have no problems in picking up a victory here as they have a lot more experience and quality within their ranks than Linfield. It should be goals in this one as Linfield have scored at least two goals in four of their last six home fixtures across all competitions, while Celtic have netted 36 goals in their last ten away games.

Linfield Preview

Linfield have won the NIFL Premiership title with just two points clear off the runners-up Crusaders. Linfield’s secret for their good performance throughout their previous campaign has been their solid defence as they have only conceded 24 goals in 38 league games. They only managed to beat La Fiorita 1-0 on aggregate in the first Champions League qualifying round, but it has to be said that have also missed a penalty kick in the first leg of that tie. Linfield have recently played a friendly fixture against the Scottish side Hearts, but they were thrashed 1-4. Prior to this result, Linfield were on a 16-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. In addition, Linfield played against Scottish opposition last season when they lost 2-0 in extra-time at the hands of Queen of the South in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Regarding their European experience, Linfield have only won 11 of 55 European ties they have played and their last participation in the Champions League qualifiers was five years ago when they lost 3-0 on aggregate at the hands of AEL Limassol in the 2nd round.

Linfield Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Linfield ahead of this tie.

Celtic Preview

On the other hand, this will be Celtic’s first competitive game of the season after they managed to beat Aberdeen 2-1 in the Scottish FA Cup Final a month and a half ago. They have played four friendlies since then, winning two and drawing two in the process. Their most recent friendly fixture ended as a 0-9 victory over Shamrock Rovers, although the Irish side used the second squad. Scott Sinclair and Stuart Armstrong scored twice for Celtic while summer signing Mikael Lustig, James Forrest, Tom Rogic and Jonny Hayes were also on target. Manager Brendan Rodgers was delighted to see his team in good form despite the fact that this was only the 4th game of pre-season. 12 months ago, Celtic suffered a disappointing 1-0 first-leg defeat at the hands of the Gibraltarian side Lincoln Red Imps, but they managed to win 3-0 in the second leg. Overall, Rodgers had an amazing first campaign in Glasgow as he completed the Scottish treble and remained unbeaten against domestic opposition. They finished bottom of their Champions League group table last season, but to be fair, they had a very tough draw against Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Moenchengladbach. Celtic’s away form over the past nine months has been impressive as they are undefeated in 23 away games across all competitions, winning 18 of these.
