Legia Warszawa vs Ajax Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Ajax travel to Warsaw in great shape to take on Legia Warszawa on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League round of 32 tie. Legia picked up a narrow 0-1 win on the road at Arka Gdynia last time out in the Ekstraklasa thanks to a first-half goal from Tomasz Jodlowiec. Meanwhile, Ajax won 2-0 at home over Sparta Rotterdam with Bertrand Traore and Kasper Dolberg getting on the scoresheet for Peter Bosz’s side. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Legia Warszawa Preview

Legia Warszawa finished 2016 on a four-game unbeaten streak in the Ekstraklasa, and kicked off the new year in a similar manner with a narrow 0-1 victory at Arka Gdynia last weekend. The win lifts Legia to third position in the league table with 38 points after 21 league outings, just four points off the current leaders Lechia Gdansk. Legia have endured a mixed run of form during the winter break, having won just once in their six friendlies. Regarding their European adventure, Legia picked up a narrow 1-0 home win over Sporting Lisbon in their final Champions League group fixture to book their place into this stage of the Europa League competition. The bad news is that Legia have conceded 25 goals in their last seven European fixtures, including 14 in two meetings with Borussia Dortmund. Their victory over Sporting Lisbon ended a six-game winless streak in Europe. On home soil, Legia have only lost once in their last ten games across all competitions, having scored at least once in nine of these. During this strong home streak, Legia managed some impressive results - a 3-3 draw against Real Madrid along with a narrow 1-0 win over Sporting Lisbon.

Ajax Preview

Ajax have struggled for fluency towards the end of 2016, but they kicked off the new year in an excellent manner. The Amsterdammers have won their five games across all competitions after the winter break, scoring 11 goals and conceding just once in the process. Ajax currently stand in second spot in the Eredivisie table with 52 points to their name after 22 rounds, just five points off the current leaders Feyenoord. Ajax looked decent going forward throughout this Eredivisie campaign, as they are the division’s second top scorers with 46 goals in 22 league fixtures. Kasper Dolberg and Davy Klaassen are Ajax’s joint-topscorers in the Eredivisie, as the pair bagged 20 goals and 10 assists between them. Regarding their Europa League campaign this season, Ajax topped their Group G table with 14 points to their name thanks to a record of four wins and two draws in six league outings. Kasper Dolberg, Hakim Ziyech and Amin Younes have been Ajax’s most dangerous players throughout the group stage campaign, having scored two goals each. Prior to this solid Europa League group stage campaign, Ajax suffered an unexpected defeat at the hands of FC Rostov in the Champions League play-offs. On the road, Ajax are undefeated in the last four away games in the Europa League, having scored two goals in three of these.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Legia haven’t been at their best during the winter break and their recent win in the Ekstraklasa haven’t been that convincing. Meanwhile, Ajax head into this clash on a high, winning their five games after the winter break and scoring at least two goals in four of these. I’m backing Ajax to win and I’m also expecting a high-scoring affair.
