Leeds United vs Sheffield Wednesday Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Saturday afternoon (15:00) fixture is a Yorkshire derby between two sides struggling for form now.  Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats.

Leeds were held to a 2-2 draw at Reading in their last fixture in a game they can consider themselves unlucky not to have won.  United fought back from a goal behind to take the lead with a goal each from Pontus Jansson and Pablo Hernandez but were pegged back and had to settle for a point.

Sheffield Wednesday put to an end their losing run though they would still be disappointed in their 1-1 draw at home to Bolton.  George Boyd gave them the lead 12 minutes from time but Wanderers claimed a point with a 93rd minute goal.

The reverse fixture came at the beginning of October in an encounter that Wednesday won 3-0 thanks to a Gary Hooper brace and a Kieran Lee goal.  It means Hooper has four in the last four head-to-head battles.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Leeds are home favourites but I would not want to be backing a side at those prices with just one victory from their last 13.  Then again, I could not be siding with a Sheffield Wednesday side with just one win their last 13.

These two sides are in the top three in the six-game form table for goals against in recent times so this game might have more goals than the bookmakers are suggesting.  Over 2.5 goals looks a sensible play while a smaller wage on over 3.5 could also work out as good value.

Leeds United Preview

It is now just one victory from their last 13 for Leeds which has seen them slide down the table and the play-offs look beyond them this season.  Three of their next four are at home to sides in the bottom eight and United must put some points on the board are manager Paul Heckingbottom might start to feel the pressure.

At Elland Road, they have lost three of their last five and won just one of their previous six matches.  Pierre-Michel Lasogga has found the net three times in his last five at home while Kemar Roofe has bagged two in five.

Each of the last three Championship games Leeds have played and seven of their last eight have gone over 2.5 goals.  In just one of their last eight have the Yorkshire outfit kept a clean sheet.

Leeds United Team News

Liam Cooper (dead leg), Andy Lonergan (neck), Kemar Roofe (calf) and Tyler Roberts (shin) are doubts while Conor Shaughnessy and Luke Ayling (both ankle) are long-term absentees.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview

The Owls put to an end a run of four straight league defeats though it is still just no league victory in the last five and just one in their last 13.  They need a couple more wins to be sure of safety but four of their next five are against teams above them in the table.

Away from Hillsborough, they have lost their last two but did draw the three before that.  A lack of goals on their travels has been a big problem with four blanks from their last six and just two netted in these in total.

Four of the last five and six of the last eight Sheffield Wednesday have played in the league have seen both teams find the back of the net.  Around 56% of the goals they have scored this season have come in the second-half with with just 20% in the opening and closing 15 minutes of a game.

Sheffield Wednesday Team News

Ross Wallace (knee), Jordan Thorniley (concussion) and Joost van Aken (hip) are doubts while Gary Hooper (hip), Kieran Westwood (groin), Steven Fletcher, Sam Hutchinson (both knee), Barry Bannan (groin) and Fernando Forestieri (knee) are all long-term absentees.
