Leeds United vs Sheffield United Match Prediction

By Richard McTiernan

This Friday evening (19:45) SKY TV game is an intriguing local derby between two sides in the top four of the Championship table. Here we have our match preview with all the best predictions, betting tips and match stats. Leeds bounced back to winning ways with an impressive 3-0 victory away to Bristol City thanks to a Samuel Saiz brace and then added one more through Pierre Lassoga. They were also in League Cup action in midweek but went down 3-1 away to Premier League Leicester despite taking the lead through Pablo Hernandez. Sheffield United continued their strong run with a 2-1 home victory over Reading last time out. The Blades were 2-0 up in 37 minutes thanks to a goal each from Paul Coutts and Billy Sharp but had a nervy ending after letting the Royals back in on the 85th minute but they held firm to claim all three points. The last time these two sides met came in March 2011 and that was at Bramall Lane with Sheff U winning that 1-0. Leeds won the reverse fixture earlier in the season 2-0 but they have won just one of the last seven head-to-heads between the pair.

Betting Tips and Predictions

I think Leeds might be the value selection here with home advantage. The Whites have lost just once at Elland Road this season while the Blades have lost all three games they have played away to teams in the top 14 of the division. These two are sides are fast starters and sit one and two in the half-time league table so we could get goals early on. They are numerous ways to play this backing a single team to score in the first-half, backing both teams to score in the opening 45 or my preferred option backing the total first-half goals to be over 1.5.

Leeds United Preview

The expected goals suggested Leeds were deserved victors over Bristol City last time out as they put to an end a run of three straight defeats. It means that the Whites sit in fourth place after 13 games with the gap between them and United in fourth place three points. At Elland Road, they lost their last match against Reading but before that had won three straight and were unbeaten in five. A feature of their home fixtures is their strong defence with the Yorkshire outfit among five teams to have conceded a league low of just three goals in front of their own fans. The Whites are fast starters with no side having scored more than the 13 they have netted in the opening 45 minutes. Around 62% of their goals have come in the first-half with 38% in the opening 30.

Leeds United Team News

Gaetano Berardi will miss the game through suspension following his red card in the last league game.

Sheffield United Preview

The Blades were deserved victors against Reading according to the expected goals data in a result that means it is now four wins from their last five. United sit in third place in the Championship and are just two behind leaders Wolves. Away from Bramall Lane, they have played six times and the results have been mixed with three victories and three defeats. An interesting thing to note is they have lost all the road games against sides in the top 14 while winning all against teams in the bottom eight. Only Cardiff (10) have conceded a lower amount than the 11 the Yorkshire have conceded in the league. We talked before about how Leeds were strong starters well United are even better and would have been ahead in eight of their 13 fixtures going into the break.

Sheffield United Team News

Richard Stearman (hamstring) is listed day-to-day while Caolan Lavery (head) and Kieron Freeman (knee) are out for at least a month.
