Latvia vs Portugal Match Prediction

By Marius Hrebenciuc

Portugal will be looking to extend their winning streak in the World Cup qualifying group B to five games when they travel to the Stadions Skonto to take on Latvia on Friday night. Latvia were narrowly beaten 1-0 on the road in Switzerland last time out, in a game in which they had just one shot on target. On the other hand, Portugal picked up a comfortable 3-0 home win over Hungary thanks to an opener from Andre Silva and a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo. Below we have our betting tips, predictions, team news and match stats all in our SBAT preview.

Betting Predictions and Tips

Portugal should have no problems in picking up all three points here as they have won all five meetings with Latvia so far, scoring at least two goals in each of these. Furthermore, Portugal netted 19 goals throughout this qualifying campaign while Latvia have conceded nine.

Latvia Preview

Latvia kicked off this World Cup qualifying campaign with a narrow 0-1 away win in Andorra, but their form since then has been awful. They suffered defeats in each of their last four group fixtures, scoring just one goal in this term. Furthermore, they were thrashed 5-0 by Georgia in a friendly fixture back in March. Latvia find themselves second from the bottom in the group B table with just three points under their belts after five rounds. Scoring goals has definitely been their biggest problem throughout this qualifying campaign, as they only managed two goals in five group fixtures. Coach Marians Pahars stepped down in March after the humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of Georgia and he has been replaced by former national team head coach Aleksandrs Starkovs. The 61-year-old manager was the head coach of the national team from 2001 to 2004, qualifying the team for Euro 2004. He returned to coach the team once again in 2007, but stepped down in 2013. This difficult clash with Portugal will be Starkovs’ first game in charge, but the Portuguese are in dire need for three points in order to close the gap at the top of the group table. Furthermore, Latvia have been terrible on home soil over the past year and a half, winning just two of their last nine home fixtures across all competitions.

Latvia Team News

There are no fresh injury concerns for Latvia ahead of this tie.

Portugal Preview

On the contrary, the Euro 2016 champions, Portugal, started this qualifying campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat in Switzerland, but bounced back with four consecutive victories over Andorra, Faroes Islands, Latvia and Hungary. The most impressive fact is that the Portuguese managed to score 19 goals in their most recent four qualifiers while conceding just once. Cristiano Ronaldo has been in fantastic shape throughout this qualifying campaign, scoring nine goals in just four appearances. Andre Silva has also played a vital part in Portugal’s performance, helping the team with five goals. Despite the recent results, Portugal sit only in second spot in the group B table with 12 points after five rounds, three points off the current leaders Switzerland. The bad news is that Portugal have struggled on the road over the past months, winning just two of their last five away games across all competitions. Although, they managed to pick up back-to-back wins in their two trips to Latvia, scoring at least two goals in each of these. Head-to-head, the Portuguese are undefeated in their five meetings with Latvia across all competitions, scoring 15 goals in this term.

Portugal Team News

Portugal will play in the Confederations Cup after this clash against Latvia, and coach Fernando Santos has named a strong squad with Andre Gomes, Joao Mario and Bernardo Silva, and of course with Cristiano Ronaldo. Although, Eder and Renato Sanches haven’t been called up.
