Las Palmas vs Sporting Gijon Match Prediction

By Dean Carr

Las Palmas take on Sporting Gijon at the Estadio de Gran Canaria as two out of form sides meet in the first round of La Liga fixtures for 2017. Las Palmas were beaten 1-0 by Atletico Madrid last time out away from home, leaving them sat 10th in the La Liga table. Sporting Gijon on the other hand continued their slide towards relegation, as they went down 3-1 to Villarreal. Read on for a full match preview complete with betting tips and predictions.

Las Palmas Preview

Las Palmas will now look to end a three-match wait for a win when they play relegation-threatened Sporting Gijon, having lost 1-0 to Atletico Madrid in their most recent league fixture. Midfielder Saul Niguez scored the game’s only goal just before the hour mark, his first La Liga goal of the season, in a game where the visitors actually managed more attempts on target than Diego Simeone’s side. In the league, Las Palmas have now won just once in their previous five league games - failing to keep a clean sheet during that period - with their form having long since dropped off after a superb start to the season. After winning three of their first four games, they have managed just two victories from the twelve matches that have followed since, a run which now sees them sit 10th in the table. Their decline has, in the main, come through a lack of points picked up on the road, with their home form remaining very good. Winning four and drawing four of their eight at home, they will hope to maintain this unbeaten run at home coming into this one.

Sporting Preview

Sporting Gijon will be hoping 2017 will be kinder to them than the end of the preceding year, after a horrific run of form saw them slide into the relegation zone. They proved no match for Villarreal last time out, being comfortably beaten by the Champions League-chasing side at home, ensuring they saw out 2-16 in the bottom three. Jonathan Dos Santos opened the scoring for the Yellow Submarines, before striker Nicola Sansone added a second seven minutes later. Alexandre Pato added a third fifteen minutes from time to guarantee the three points, with Gijon’s eighty-ninth minute reply from Carlos Carmona coming as little more than a consolation. Gijon’s recent form has been atrocious, winning just once in their previous thirteen La Liga fixtures, that being a 3-1 win over 20th-placed Osasuna at home. Five points from a possible thirty-nine in the league screams relegation form, with the team really lacking confidence at this moment in time. They have managed just two clean sheets in total all season, with their record of conceding thirty-three goals in sixteen La Liga outings only outdone by Osasuna’s thirty-four goal tally.

Las Palmas Team News

Sergio Ezequiel Araujo (knee) is ruled out for Las Palmas, with Pedro Bigas (stomach) and Angel Montoro (knee) both expected to be sidelined also. Artiles Oliva Aythami (muscle)and Kevin-Prince Boateng (leg) will both face fitness tests.

Sporting Team News

Fernando Amorebieta is suspended and will miss this one, as will Dani Ndi through a hamstring problem. Alberto Ramos Lora, Jorge Mere (both groin), Lillo Castellano (knee) and Carlos Castro (ankle) are all carrying knocks.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Las Palmas’ home form has been fantastic this season and it’s fully expected that they will maintain their unbeaten run in this match. Sporting Gijon, irrelevant of if they’re home or away, have been dreadful for the majority of this season and the chances of them ending their winless run away appear slim. Home win is my tip.
